One of my very favorite photos.
I think the baby gator is explaining what he's going to do to this turtle when he gets bigger! And the turtle is quite unimpressed! This gator is probably in his third year, and will stay with the mother until he gets big enough to start eating the new gators as they hatch...usually about five years old. I love this one! (Florida Bible Christian School)
For tour on Friday we decided to go back to the everglades and take the airboat ride as a group. The church has a van for us to use, and as it only holds ten people, and it was a sunny day, Dave and Wanda were riding their motorcycle. Bob was driving the van. Dave and Wanda were ahead of us, when we approached a dump truck. Bob pulled out to pass him (we were on a two lane road) and the semi that seemed to be stuck to our bumper pulled out with us. Bob said when he pulled back in he looked in his side mirror to see what the semi had in mind, and it too pulled back into the lane. Immediately Bob saw the dump truck swerve across both lanes. Its left front tire had exploded and the dirt and rubber was flying. The driver was able to get the truck under control and did not end up in the ditch, but he left marks all across the road. Seconds earlier and we would have been beside him. Bob still gets pale when he tells the story. We always circle up and
Interesting arrangement, because
if it was dusk or dawn the gator would be dining on these turtles! have prayer before we leave for tour but this time we had gathered out front by the sign for group pictures and it got forgotten. We all talked about that when we saw the accident and as soon as we stopped we all got out and thanked God for watching over us even when we forget to ask! I wonder how many times we’re protected and aren’t even aware of it.
We saw a lot of gators again, and this time we had time to stand and watch the gators and birds and fish. Some of the couples took a tram tour around the park, some rented bikes and rode the paths, and some of us just walked them. It was an awesome day. We followed that up with a picnic lunch, and then an airboat ride. The everglades have changed colors since we’ve been here~~the saw grass was green last time we were there, and this time it’s kind of brown. As I look over the area, I’d say it’s more brown than green. We were told this will happen (after all, it is winter!), but it doesn’t last long and then they green up again. I mentioned
Tri-color herron.
We hadn't spent much time watching the birds, but this time a park ranger came along and pointed out several birds and explained what they're doing, and we took the time to stand and watch their movements. before that the water is clear, although as you look into it it’s brown….I know that doesn’t make any sense, but it’s the only way I can describe it. Clear brown water. The whole area is limestone, with about five inches of dirt on top of that.
Saturday Bob and I went to Boca Raton (about 30 miles away) and watched the second round of a senior PGA golf tournament (over 50 is a senior in golf). The weather couldn’t have been nicer….mid 80's, with a breeze. These golfers are the ones that we followed when they were on the PGA tour…Gary Player, Tom Kite, Curtis Strane, and Nick Price, to drop a few names! Very fun time. We stood on the #1 tee and watched half of them tee off (the other half started on #10), and then went to #18 green and watched all of them come in. You hear interesting exchanges on the tee box…one golfer asked another if he’d had a good winter, and he replied that he did, although it was too short. “Two months is just not long enough.” I nearly laughed out loud, because I’m sure the majority of the northern population
Baby herrons
These two came out of their nest (which we couldn't see) and walked around on the branches, fluffed out their feathers, squawked about how great they were, and then went back to their nest! Apparently they're not quite ready to find out how great they are! would say that’s the exact length of time winter should be! Also, the conversation reminded me of what we teachers would say in the fall~~”how was your summer? Good, but too short~~three months isn’t long enough”! It’s all in your perspective, don’t you agree?! Also we heard one golfer thank Bernhard Langer for the bbq the night before, and then said he has a nice house! Just like real people!! We tried to go into the clubhouse and meet all the pros, but the man at the door with the badge and the gun didn’t recognize us as someone who should be in there, so we just skipped it!
