Today was our first and only FULL day in DC and it was AWESOME! I don’t think the number of significant places we saw has sunk in. We started with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Mrs. Bundy’s students did an extensive unit over the Holocaust, so this was further reinforcement for her class. It was a somber reminder of an extraordinarily sad and tragic chapter in our world’s history. While at the museum, some of the kids got to meet Michael Korenblit and Kathleen Janger, the authors of Until We Meet Again, a book about his parents’ survival of the Holocaust. This was a book that many of Mrs. Bundy’s students read during her unit about the Holocaust. It was especially neat for Lexie because she had done a book report over their book. The authors were nice enough to sign their book for us. From there we went to the steps of the US Capital Building where we ate burritos! The food was great and it made for a funny picture . After lunch we had an appointment to tour the Capital Building. This is the first year of the Visitor Center at the Capital Building and it was
impressive. Our tour was a little less than an hour. It was so neat to see the inside of such a remarkable building and the many paintings and statues it holds. When we finished there, we walked through an underground tunnel to the Library of Congress. We didn’t have a tour there, but we got a chance to do a little self-exploration. So many books, so little time! After the Library of Congress was the Supreme Court. If you’re keeping track so far, we have visited the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the US Capital Building, the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court and it was still mid-afternoon! After the Supreme Court, went to the National Archives where we saw such documents as the Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Louisiana Purchase, the Emancipation Proclamation, the 19th Amendment, and many other historically and socially significant documents. Talk about history coming to life! It is one thing to read about and study those documents, but to see them gave many of us goose bumps! After the archives, we went to eat. Dinner was at a little Italian restaurant in an
office building and while the setting was modest, the food was great! Our tour guide, Tony met us at dinner and we went on an evening tour of some of the monuments. We went to the World War II, Vietnam, Lincoln, and Korea Memorials. I know I’ve said this before, but words can’t do them justice. They are so much more magnificent in person than any picture or movie can show them. They brought history to life and show, the best way possible, the price paid for our freedom. It gave all of us a greater appreciation for our service men and women and our country. After the memorials, we said goodbye to our awesome tour guide, Tony and headed back to the hotel. We got home at a decent time again, so the kids had an opportunity to swim before curfew and lights out. The kids have done so well and Mrs. Bundy & I couldn’t be more proud of all of them. Their behavior and respect, especially at the war memorials was impeccable. They certainly have great parents, family, and role models at home. As you know, we head home tomorrow and while we are all excited to
see our families and sleep in our own beds, we hate to see the trip end.
