It was just after 6:30 am when we hit the road with a great sendoff and fanfare from cousins Miki, Andy and Paula. Under bright blue skies and temps in the mid-60s we headed north on Hwy 49 to 89, stopping for breakfast in Graeagle. We worked our way over to 395 and then north to Susanville, as the temperatures hovered in the mid-80s. We took the scenic route on Hwy 139 past Eagle Lake through the Modoc National Forest, and had the highway pretty much all to ourselves. Mt. Shasta kept an eye on us all the way to the Oregon border, where we picked up 97 in Klamath Falls. Continuing north past Crater Lake (no time to stop this trip) we arrived at our motel in Chemult after a nine hour day in the saddle, tired but excited about the trip ahead.
