Week #2
This week’s blogpost will be slightly different than the one from last week. Since my arrival here I have been able to do so many things around the area. Even so much that at the end of the week, I was not able to remember what I did on which days.
This week started off with a fun night out at a local place in Temecula called “The Stampede”. This is a place where you can learn how to line dance, play a game of poole and even sing some kareoke. This was something completely different from my normal nights out. I was of course not allowed to drink alcohol, since I am under 21 years old, so that was quite different. And also, I discovered that line dancing is in reality a lot harder than it seems. If I had learned the steps to all the songs beforehand, I might have not made such a fool of myself as I did. For the people who live around Temecula, the stampede is the place to be when it comes to dancing. Unfortunately, I suck at dancing. But of course this is only part of what the stampede
had to offer. Later this week we visited the stampede again, and Kiersti had talked to the owner and he decided to let all the Europeans try the mechanical bull. Since I have been riding bucking horses before, I thought this would be a piece of cake. I thought wrong. My first ride was easy so I decided to go again, but of course the man who was controlling the bull wanted to try and throw me off. He succeeded and now my thumb hurts, ouch.
This week we had also decided that after all the work at the Ranch, we had deserved a fun night out, so we decided to go bowling in one of the biggest bowling centres of Temecula. In Holland, we normally have about 10 different lanes for bowling. Since this is America, everything has to be bigger. So I was pretty amazed when I walked into the huge bowling centre with at least 30 bowling lanes. One of the guys who also went bowling with our whole club was Gareth. He used to be in the marines a few years back and he has this card he showed to one of the
employees in the bowling centre. Because of this card we got 25% of the normal price for the six of us. Somehow everybody who is in or was recently in the marines or the army gets a discount for things like bowling, swimming etc. After bowling we went for burgers at in-and-out. The night was complete after this typical American meal.
On Monday I met somebody interesting. A girl from Temecula came to the ranch for a jumping lesson from Kiersti. Since Kiersti was still in town, I had a little chat with her and guess what, I got a compliment again! She was wondering what part of America I was from, since I had no Dutch accent at all. Mostly when people say this to me I just blush and say Thank You. But inside I am jumping and screaming, because it means that I’m doing really good!
Later this week me and the other workawayers on the ranch decided we wanted to go for a nice day on Oceanside beach. But there was one problem, we needed a car to get there. Luckily me and Sara were able to pursuade Gareth to
take us there in his car. The day at the beach was absolutely amazing. As far as you could see there was a gorgeous beach and palmtrees everywhere. After me and the other three girls were done at the beach and ready to go home, we first went into town to get some Coldstone icecream. Jessi had been talking about this all day, so of course she got me really curious! And also, I love icecream. And again, Coldstone was very American. Every flavour I could possibly think of and more was available. There was a list of icecreams you could choose of, but of course you could just pick anything you want on your icecream and they would make it. The bigger the better.
We have this one tradition, where Wednesday is Chinese day. There is this great Chinese restaurant in Temecula where Crystal takes all the workawayers for lunch each Wednesday. For only 7 dollars you can eat anything you want and as much as you want. There is not only Chinese food available, but also pizza, fries and lots of other dishes. The first time I went here it was just me and the
other three girls, but this week we had 4 new arrivals from the UK, so we had sort of a new group to show around Temecula and it’s amazing food.
Of course I have been doing the regular work at the ranch as well, which includes mucking out stables, watering the horses and riding the horses in the most beautiful area thinkable.
This week was full of fun experiences and meeting a lot of new people! Next week will be very busy week since we have the Model Horse Rally coming up at the ranch. There will be a lot of work to do this week, but it will definitely be worth it. It will also be interesting for me to work with the younger kids.
I hoped you liked my second blogpost! I will be posting more later on about my third week in this amazing country.
