Woke up pretty sick today from stupid cold or hay fever. Wish I could have done better so could have done a decent hike in Yosemite. We were actually pretty lucky to arrive the time we did. Only a few days after we left there were huge bush fires and the tours after ours missed Yosemite. You could hire bikes. Cat, Barb and I went to the cafe and bought some sandwiches and then went to see if we could hire biked but they were all gone. We jumped on the shuttle and got off at one of the walking trails by the river. It was only rated a moderate train but the three of us all found it relatively hard. The fact I was sick didn't help. The track was quite hilly and the weather hot but it was beautiful and I got some nice photos. We saw a rattlesnake on the trail which was pretty awesome. A guy told us where it was so we looked as we walked past. He was sitting semi under a rock on the side of the trial and he was curled up in a potentially ready to strike position with his tail rattling
like crazy. Barb was so excited because she wanted to see one rattling at San diego Zoo but no luck. Now here we were with a rattler going off only 1-2 meters from us. Us clearly in a strike zone but not thinking about that. I think it was a diamond back rattle snake judging on the marking and where it was. It was huge too. The ones in the zoo were tiny compared to this guy. He was one healthy rattler. After seeing him I think we started to think twice about the rocks we sat on when taking a break. We came to a bridge and a little waterfall which was really pretty. It was an effort to find a place squirrel free to have lunch. Everyone everywhere was struggling to eat. Squirrels were everywhere and they were not scared and trying to grab food at all directions. We found a place that looked fairly squirrel free so sat down to eat. One came flying out at the bushes near Cat and she screamed and threw her lunch and rubbish at it. I didn't want to leave him with plastic wrapping so I had to scare the squirrel
away and picked the rubbish up. Cat was sure that as a result of this I now had rabies.
As we were walking back to the bus someone yelled "bear" and we turned around and a black bear, failry young, ran across the road between us and the boys. He was only a few meters behind us. He ran into the bush and we followed to the side of the road and took some photos. Mine turned out terrible. Bear shot fail #2. Note to self: buy a new camera.
Tonight I just went to bed because I was sick. Everyone else had a party and BBQ in the park behind the hotel. Apparently it was a pretty big drunk night and security came and joined in the party. Most got home around 2:00 am or so.
