After leaving Chula Vista, we spent several weeks in Santee Lakes. We’ve taken side trips all around the greater San Diego area including Point Loma, La Jolla, Torrey Pines, and up the Pacific Coast Highway. Weather’s been sunny but chilly during the days, and cold at night. Just within the last few weeks, we’ve had rain (sorely needed here); and a cold front came in which produced snow in the higher elevations. We hit another Indian casino (Alan’s still ahead in blackjack!) and visited the Wild Animal Park. Mostly, we’ve vegged, watched videos when it rained, and took walks around the Lakes. We had sheepskin seat covers made for Coco and became friends with the company owners, one of whom is from New Zealand. We left Santee on March 9 and headed up to Mira Loma, ... read more

We left around 8:30pm on Tuesday, after cleaning the trailer in LaConner, loading up the storage unit, returning to Seattle and cleaning the Queen Anne house... The drive was easy. We didn't run into any heavy traffic, except for an accident in Oregon that blocked the freeway. We were near the front of the line when they managed to get the driver out of the pickup truck..the truck was crushed but the driver survived! We arrived in Santa Barbara on Thursday afternoon...it was sunny and hot! A great change from the Northwest rain of late...We spent time with my son Luke who goes to college here and met his girlfriend, Kim. Our hotel is across from the beach, arranged by Kim who works here part time. We will leave for LA this afternoon and fly out ... read more

Got up early, damn those noisy snorers! Anyone who snores should be banned from dorm rooms. Also got told off for taking 1 extra bagel for breakfast, which was for Louisa anyway! Damn gestapo!! Drove down to the Golden Gate Bridge for some close up views, although it was again a misty morning. We then took the famous scenic Highway 1 down the ruggedly beautiful coastline of California where we saw Elephant Seals which of course stank of fish, as all seals do :-) It was a long tiring day so we stopped in Santa Barbara rather than travel all the way to LA.... read more

Well I have been so busy after getting back from the states, I haven't even had the chance to complete my last two blog posts, HOW SLACK IS THAT! I have decided it's better to have something than nothing at all, even though I might be a bit rusty on the details now. Once we got to Santa Barbara, we moved straight in with Sunita's friends Tony and Dana - a lovely young married couple living in the "family" units some UCSB living quarters. UCSB stands for University of California, Santa Barbara - which is a pretty famous uni mainly known for it's crazy partying. Other uni's around the place include UCLA, Berkeley, UCSF... One thing about the American universities is how proud the students are of them, it's a real image thing which uni you ... read more

Each monastery and retreat has its own personality. When people ask us our favorites, we always say "The last one we visited," because the spirit of each of these places is so welcoming and vibrant. But The Immaculate Heart Community and La Casa de Maria in Santa Barbara has some added perks ... a lovely swimming pool and tennis courts. As U.S. News & World Report said in its 12/26/06 edition .... if peacefulness is "not enough, there's always a swimming pool."... read more

Retreat and Conference Center Offers Hospitality and Peacefulness Some years ago friends insisted we stop at the San Ysidro Inn, a fancy resort in the Montecito section of Santa Barbara. It was beautiful, and expensive. Quite a surprise when we began our reserach for "Sanctuaries" and visited the Immaculate Heart Community and their La Casa de Maria retreat and conference center to discover that the retreat property adjoined the resort property. But, instead of paying hundreds of dollars and getting lots of luxury, we were paying a fraction of the price and getting lots of peace! Members of the Immaculate Heart Community welcome guests from Wednesday through Saturday in a lovely mansion that sits in the center of the 26-acre property of lush tropical vegetation and orange groves. From the moment you enter the grounds you ... read more

Road trip For our last week in California Jen and I decided to get ourselves some wheels, hit the road and head down the coast. We'd taken up a very kind offer from Tom the driver on our Yosemite trip to meet us and help Jen get to grips with driving in America and all the different laws and to talk us through the route to Highway 1 from the car hire place, with Jen driving he took us on the route and then we took him back into town and dropped him off. I don't know how far we would have got without his help, but once we were going Jen picked it up really quick and drove like a true pro, only occaisionly veering towards the edge of the road towards the cliff edge...... ... read more
