My husband and I went to the United States of America for a week. We went first of all to San Francisco, staying with my aunt, who is a teacher in San Jose. We drove across the Golden Gate Bridge, that was luckily not covered in fog! We had great views of the bridge on the opposite side of the water to San Francisco, both from the usual tourist view point to the north east of the bridge. Then my aunt drove us back up and around to the north west of the bridge, which meant that San Francisco was behind the bridge. It was a great view. We also drove into the city, and walked along Fisherman’s Wharf, which has been described to us as being like Brighton in the UK on a good day! It being January, and pretty cold and wet, it was not at all crowded - I am sure it is packed in the warmer, sunnier months. We saw the island of Alcatraz - which is really close to the city. There were boat trips out to the island, but it was too cold for us! We wandered up and down Fisherman’s Wharf and tried some
of the Ghirardelli chocolate that is made in San Francisco - it is a lot better than Hershey’s! My husband also bought some ‘taffy’ a sort of American version of toffee (as seen in Friends, when Ross eats too much of it!). I didn’t think much of it - it was softer and synthetic, although my husband liked the root beer flavour - but then he loves root beer! We took a ride on a cable car - which was cold but fun, we went from China Town down to Fisherman’s Wharf and back. I am not sure if any local people use them to get around much, the cable cars we saw were certainly full of winter-time tourists. I loved seeing the hilly streets that plateau out every-so-often at a cross roads or intersection. Then we flew to Las Vegas.
