My flight was leaving Auckland at 7.00pm (19h00) on Wednesday November 26. After a 13-hour flight, a 3-hour connection in Los Angeles, a one-hour flight to San Francisco, and a one-hour transfer to Marin County, I made it to Jennifer's house at 5.30pm (17h30) on, take a guess... Wednesday November 26, meaning two hours
before leaving for that 18-hour trip... Making my day (November 26 is my Saint's day) the longest day of my life! For the first time, I used my blue passport, I was even proud of it since November 4, and I whizzed through immigration and customs like a breeze...
Needless to say, I slept for more than 12 hours that night, enjoying Jen's guest fluffy bed and making up for all the past four weeks' intensity. It was just about breakfast time for me when Jen's dad picked me up for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner at his house, and I had to wait about an hour before accepting a drink. The dinner was a lavishly laid-out feast of delicious turkey, roasted veggies, yams, cranberry sauce, blue cheese
stuffing, etc, that was shared by an eclectic team of 14 friends and family members. I deeply regret not having taken pictures of that merry moment...
Later that night, we went to pick up Yamil, my old friend from Puerto Rico turned pilot in Ohio. Over the past 6 months, I have met with a few old and more recent friends on the road (Caro in Africa, Caro in Hong Kong, Chris and Sally in Australia) but all in all my daily life has relied mostly on short-lived, though sometimes intense, friendships, in which each of us had to retell one's life story, knowing that each time you meet someone new, you would have to do it all over again, and again, and again. So, it was really a relief to be with two old and dear friends, who know me as much as I know them.
Over the next few days, we slept to our hearts' content, feasted on sunny brunches, and visited some of the areas's jewels: the Muir Redwoods, the Marin Headlands and Point Bonita, and the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco--the latter reminding me so sharply of that 2005 happy trip with my husband
that it was hard not to cry at times, though it was a beautiful day and being with Yamil and Jen was so comforting.
After taking the compulsory pictures of us with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, we met with a couple of odd Argentinians with their 1920s car, their three kids playing in the back together (and a fourth on the way), who have been travelling their way accross South and North America for years... They had originally started a six-month trip from Argentina to Alaska, and after seven years, were still on the road. What an inspiration!
When Yamil and I hit the town itself on Monday, I felt like I knew my way around really well, almost like at home, as George and I had visited it at great length. The weight on my chest was such though, that I knew I had made the right decision about not staying there a whole other week in the end. As a result I would not have the time to meet with my other San Francisco friends, but I arranged to spend the last evening with Tim, one of my first Puerto Rico roommates from
1999, and so was on my way again on December 2...
