The Gaslamp District was the new town in the mid-19th century. But
within half a century, it was an area of ill repute and quickly became a
slum. The whole place was due for demolishing in the 1970's but a
civic regeneration programme has turned it into a hip and trendy
entertainment district with numerous restaruants and many restored
Victorian buildings. In the 1980's, it was designated as the National
Historic Disctict.
William Heath David House is situated in the
middle of the Distict and offered an interesting tour of a house from
the mid-1850's.
One corner of the Gaslamp District is the
Pacific Asian District. Not exactly Chinatown, but it was the area
where many of the early Chinese immigrants settled. Today there is the
Chinese Historical Museum with a small exhibiton of the lives of many
early Chinese settlers.
The Old Town was the place where Mexican
solders lived after independence from Spain in the early 1820's. In
1872, a fire destroy much of the centre and the population moved to the
New Town. Today, the State Historic Park is a collection of restored
buildings offering endless eating and retail opportunities. It is a bit
of a sanitised
Balboa Theatre
Dating from 1924, it suffered years of neglect. But it is now completely resotred. version of Mexico but nonetheless there were some
interesting buildings.
