All kinds of roads took us from the majestic Yosemite National Park to our hidden retreat in the tall redwoods outside Mendocino, where we will hike for a week. The roads started with the incredible CA-41 that winds endlessly down from the Wawona Hotel, fleeing the towering sequoias, lodgepole pine and incense cedars for 40 miles, then traveling West through the Sacramento River delta, and finally to wine-proud Napa for the night. The next morning we followed the breathtakingly beautiful CA-1 from Jenner to Mendocino, meandering along the Pacific coast. Many bicyclists were traveling this narrow and busy highway, passed by several clutches of motorcyclists that tore past single file or in pairs. In addition, there was road repair, RVs, houses crowding the right-of-way, heavy-duty wiring dangling across the road, and trees arching over the pavement. ... read more

Tuesday, June 12th Holiday Inn in Elk Grove, California---Not sure who named the town, but there haven’t been any elk in this suburb of Sacramento in a VERY long time, if ever. 73 degrees at 10:21 am with blue skies and much higher temps predicted. Starting mileage was 27402. We stopped at the corner station to get gas at $3.879 per gal. Took 18 gals for $70. We had called our friends the night before and got their address in GraniteBay which is a planned community north of Sacramento. She is a Mock on two of her family lines, but not really related to us at all. Barbara used to write the Mock Historian Newsletter and we saw them in Ohio at the Mock Reunion. Anyway, we headed that way for a visit with ... read more

We are still enjoying the sights here around Albion River, just outside of Mendocino. At noon we left to go kayaking. The weather was pleasantly warm and the sky blue with a few clouds. We feel blessed that all is working out so well on this trip and kayaking was no exception. It took about two hours to get to the end of the river. We went as far down as we could before having to turn around and return. We saw all kinds of birds including, Hawk, Eagle, Cormorant, Blue Herons AND...Wild Turkey! They were all beautiful in their natural environment. The further out we got, the more we saw. We also saw a couple of River Otters with their sweet faces peaking out from the water. So quiet out there. We encoutered one other ... read more

Today we had a glorious sunny day in Mendocino. The population is just under 900 and like most of this coast, it has a history of lumber mills. Most of the population is late 50’s or older. It is overflowing with great art and shops that are nicely appointed. It’s a haven for old hippies, but they have to have some money to live here. It has a definite New England feel to it with its architecture of beach houses and lot's of gardens that are abundant with flowers even in mid-October. Some of the sidewalks are old wood plank and some are grassy bricks along with fragrant plants sprouting out everywhere. We started the day with a walk through the Farmer's Market. We find that you can get a real good feel for a town ... read more

Day 3 of our vacation had us waking up in Redwood Valley at my cousin's place. My cousin, Troy, visited with his family, as it was his wife's birthday. We celebrated with breakfast and cake... then they left and we decided to check out the beaches. What a fun day... we drove through more Redwoods and got to the beach. Ft Bragg, Casper, Glass Beach and Mendocino beaches were visited. Walking along cliffs, on the beach and just experiencing that scenery was amazing! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_Beach_(Fort_Bragg,_California) is a link to see more on Glass beach... interesting and a fun place to be. Weather was just perfect! We got home late, as usual (who said you need to get sleep on a vacation)... last night with my cousins.... read more

My last gasp at summer holidays came in the form of a road trip to the coast, the northern coast of California in Mendocino County. We left the house in Sacramento at about noon on Friday and drove north on Interstate 5 - I drove while Kris continued to work sending emails, texts and making phone calls. The drive here was unremarkable, just flat farm land as far as we could see. At Williams we turned west onto the much slower and smaller highway 20. I drove up into the coastal mountains and past Clear Lake, a very large body of water favoured by boaters with second homes in the country. We stopped at a small town of Lucerne for refreshments and a change of driver. We continued west to the coast as the trees got ... read more

Day 71 We have taken several drives and walks among the redwoods now that are along highway 101. There is just no way to describe them that can convey the feeling you get when you stand among them. Pictures aren't much better, since there is no way to get even a 1/4 of a tree in the frame. All the words like majestic, grand, awesome just don't seem majestic, grand or awesome enough. So all we can do is include some inadequate pictures and hope you can all imagine the rest. Two small towns that we have enjoyed along the way are Eureka and Ferndale. Both towns boomed from logging and farming in the late 1800's when Victorian architecture was all the rage. Many of the original homes and downtown shops have been restored. Ferndale also ... read more

Last weekend we had an adventure to Laytonville, California to go to Earth Dance. Earth Dance is a big festival that basically plays music for three days straight. You camp out next to your car and then walk into the woods for the festival. We staked out a spot and had about 5 tents in a little village, with a canopy that was pretty essential, it was really hot during the days. There's some good Rainbow family love there, which was nice to connect with. We saw a lot of our friends from Rainbow and had wonderful lovey hugs. On the way there I actually got a chance to meet up with my brother. He was going to go to the festival with me, but him and his crew got escorted out of Laytonville supposedly. I ... read more
