Day 360 - Wednesday 24 September
After taking my last overnight bus I arrived into LA at about half seven in the morning. I had to wait around an hour for Russ to turn up from Vegas before we made our way over to LAX airport. Although its a few more days before we fly home weve come to pick up a car. LA's such a big place it'll be impossible to get around without one.
Yolandas been working hard using her contacts over here to sort us out a cheap hotel room. I wont mention the name of the well known hotel chain or any names so nobody gets in trouble but she'd managed to get me a $200 a night hotel room for just $40. Unfortunately the paperwork I needed to get the discount was sent to my mate Al's place in Houston and hes had no post for 2 weeks beacuase of the hurricane that hit there. I also couldn't get hold of Yolandas contact to get another copy faxed over to the hotel. This has left me in a bit of a hole as I'd decided to risk it and now it might cost me
$1000. I managed to persuade them into cancelling the booking even though it was past the cut off point. It all turned out ok in the end but was a quite embarrising episode.
With a bit of relief we checked into a nearby motel instead. Its nowhere near as fancy but will do. We didn't have time to wait around though we're off to see an LA Dodgers baseball game. I've tried watching it on tv but find it as boring as hell but as i'm out here I thought I should give it another go. Actually seeing it live rather than on tv I found it quite entertaining however it still doesn't beat football.
Day 361 - Thursday 25 September
Although tired I was up early to make our way to Universal studios. Its absolutely brilliant I real must if your in LA. I couldn't reccommend it any more.
We'd been there all day and as were staying a little bit away from a couple of apparently good nightspots and taxis are expensive we checked out accommodation that was a bit nearer. Hmmm I think its back to the drawing board tomorrow.
Day 362
- Friday 26 September
I was up late and by the time I'd sorted out accommodation for the rest of the weekend it was already mid afternoon. As we've got a car we went to have a look around some of LA's famous areas. We called in at Sunset Boulevard, Rodeo Drive, Beverlay Hills and of course we stopped of infront of the Hollywood sign for a photo. We had hopped to spot the playboy mansion as we've heard its in the area but as we didn't know the address were not sure if we saw it or not. I certainly didn't see any playmates anyway.
After a quick stop off at Santa Monica beach to watch the sunset we set back to our motel and watched a couple of films.
Day 363 - Saturday 27 September
Were moving to a hostel today to be a bit nearer the nightlife. It means going back to a dorm room for the same price as our motel but so be it. By lunchtime we'd moved to Hermosa Beach.
The bars are already busy and apparently to avoid queueing you need to be in their by mid afternoon so as its our last weekend we started early and headed to Sharkees bar. It was going well until about half nine. Unfortuantely the place started emptying out as everybody was hammered and had had enough. Myself and Russell had been pacing ourselves so felt ok but even if its our last night out there no point spending money for the sake of it so we had to call it early.
Day 364 - Sunday 28 September
Theres been a strange fog over Hermosa beach the past couple of days thats left sunbathing out of the question. It hadn't mattered yesterday as we were in the pub all day but as its our last full day I'd like to hit the beach. Not to worry we drove about 20 miles down the coast to Huntington Beach where it was nice and sunny.
After spending all day there we called in at the cinema on our way back. I've met many people on the last night of their trip throughout the year and they've all gone out for one last wild night. Me and Russ however have gone to the cinema. However in our defence its a sunday night and quiet everywhere so we can't have a wild final fling even if we wanted.
Day 365 - Monday 29 September
Although our flights not until early evening we had to be at the airport by lunchtime to drop the car off. Its a good job we were there several hours early though as there was a problem with our tickets. Were flying British Airways but our tickets were bought through Quantas and they hadn't processed them properly so BA wont check us in.
After a bit of a back and forth between the two I sorted myself out and made the flight. Russ however wasn't so lucky. Hes missed his flight and they want to charge him $1500 for a new one. With nothing I could do I had no choice but to leave him there and board my plane. Tomorrow exactly one year after setting off I'll be back in England
