The Loves of My Life
My class- last year as 4th graders on our camping trip in Malibu. That's Julia Cho on the left- my team teacher and good friend. YESTERDAY WE ACTUALLY BOUGHT OUR TICKETS! There is no going back now! The reality of it all has not set in yet, but last night some of my dear Magnet teacher friends gave me a gift and card that made me feel quite sentimental and realize how much Griff and I are leaving behind. When I tell people about the trip, one of the first things they ask is, "You mean, are giving up your apartment?" Funny, because though I love my life here in our abode, I have no reservation about ending a rental agreement. I DO, however get a big, knotty lump in my throat when I talk about saying goodbye to the people I love.
Upon teling my students about my departure, through a tear- slurping speech, their reactions were so tender. Many cried, others acted indifferent, and some just looked like they were trying to be brave. Since my announcement, they are slightly more clingy, want to hang out a little longer after the dismissal bell rings, and make comments that are so grown up, like,"Mrs. Schutt, I am going to miss you so much, but I am happy that you get to follow your dreams." I'm Thankful for Fifth Graders!
My class- THIS year, as fifth graders, celebrating Thanksgiving- I am SO proud of how much they have grown! than many adults that I share my traveling plans with, my kids seem to "get it". There is something so beautiful about being 10 years old and still believing that you can be and do anything you want to. When do we loose that? Next week, my last with them, will be a tough one. I am certian that I am not ready for it. I have been with these kids for a year and a half, and they have changed my life immensly. I see them more than I see my husband- more than many of their parents see them! The adjustment will be much harder on me than on them! BUT they are going to be following me around the world via this site and I can't wait to share my adventures with them, in the hopes that one day in the not-so-distant-future, they will allow me the same privelage of "following" them on their journeys and adventures out in the world! I can't imagine how it must feel to have your students grow up to be successful, compassionate adults. Just thinkin' about it makes me all sappy!
Now-about the blog...
Many of you have provided some great, helpful feedback about the site- I am really glad that I set this up before actually embarking on our trip- helps us get all the bugs out!
Here are few useful/ cool tips when checking the site for our entries….
1. I LOVED reading the comments that some of you left- I imagine myself getting all excited to hear from you when we are traveling- knowing we haven’t been forgotten and that someone is actually reading this stuff! When you post a response on the site, you will be asked to enter your email address.
You will then need to check your email and confirm that you are indeed the person who added the comment. This prevents spam and pranks.
You will not see your comment post right away. I have to approve every comment before it is officially posted (again the “prank” issue).
2. Some of you have asked about adding another address to the blog alert. You do NOT need my permission to do this! Just go on the site, and add the address you want to receive update notices, where it reads, “Subscribe” and there is a little cartoon guy in a purple shirt.
3. Some of the countries that we will be visiting are a little obscure. You can get a quick overview of where we are or where we are going, by clicking on the words, “World Facts”, found at the VERY top of the web page on the black bar across the top of the screen. You will then be allowed to click on the continent where we are, and then choose the country we are in, to receive an atlas-like write-up on the country.
4. We have just confirmed and purchased our plane tickets from airtreks.com, and if you would like to see the mapped out course of our trip, you can see this by going to: http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_da.html This is a fairly new addition to the site, and I hope that they figure out a better link to it, but this works for now!
5. Please make sure that if you leave comments on the site, that they are “family appropriate- i.e. no foul language or grown-up material. If you want to send a more personal response, you definitely area welcome to! Please just send this to my personal email account at” mandyschutt@yahoo.com or for Griff: geschutt@yahoo.com
