Mickey!
I think my ears are better than his! They come complete with flashing lights! Hi everyone!
We have finally arrived on the other side of the world! We initally stayed in Anaheim which is where Disneyland is situated and used our Deal or No Deal money to buy us a room in a hotel 700 metres from the park. First thing we noticed about this strange new place- everything is BIG! The roads are super wide, the cars are massive (we only saw two barina sized cars in 6 days!) and the drinks you get served are definitely a large size by Australian terms, however these Americans are claiming that they are at least a "Regular". The first night we head out in our jet lagged state in hunt of food and find ourselves confronted with an onslaught of fast food choices only! Oh well some grease will probably help to wake us up! Mark chooses wisely and has the leanest thing on the menu- grilled chicken with only 15 grams of fat- and I choose the red meat option, steak with mushrooms on top. To our delight mine comes out complete with processed cheese on the top on my greasy, hamburger meat like steak, and Mark’s chicken comes out in its own little
Christmas is here!
There of course is a MASSIVE christmas tree at Disneyland. But it is beatuiful at night! pool of oil! This just gives you a glimpse of the food we ate over the next 6 days we spent in Anaheim. I can defiantly see why Americans have an obesity crisis- it is very hard to make a healthy choice.
In Anaheim we spent 3 days at Disneyland and California Adventures (a new park full of rides that was recently built in the Disney land car park). We had an awesome time. Everything is done to such detail within the park. They don’t miss a beat! We went on rides til we were nearly rode out, met the stars themselves, Mickey, Minney and Goofy, went to a drawing class where we learnt to draw Tigger and generally did some people watching! Boy that was a sport in itself. We started a competition between ourselves to see who could spot the biggest family wearing the same outfit! Hello- fashion police- but yes it happens! Mark had a good one- a family of 4 all in red, and the same shade of red I might add. I had the record however- a family of 10 all in bright green t-shirts, and all the little girls had their hair braided
Venice beach
Beautiful isn't it. We were at Venice Beach for sunset. exactly the same! The winner though was definitely a couple- probably about our age- who were wearing the same white runners, the same shade of denim jeans and the same grey hoodie. What a crime indeed!
We avoided the Disney scene on the weekend and instead tried to make our way to Hollywood Bvd. After being sent on totally the wrong track by our hotel dude, and due to the lack of any decent public transport we had no choice but to hire a car and drive there ourselves. It was a little hairy initially as of course we were on the wrong side of the road with all these massive cars whizzing around us, but after a while Mark mastered it and I could stop telling him to get in the middle of the lane!
Hollywood Bvd is a little more trashy than I imagined. It has numerous sex shops and tattoo parlours. But it was cool to read all the stars and watch the street performers. While we had the car we also visited Newport Beach (no I didn’t see any of the OC crowd although I was looking hard!) and Venice Beach. The latter is
Mmmm Johnny
His hands and feet are the same size, but i think thats where the similarities end! pretty cool. It has outdoor gyms right next to the beach, squash courts and lots of stalls to wander around and look at. There were so many t-shirt stalls I think Mark could have brought at least 20- but refrained to one. On Sunday morning, after being totally verbally exhausted by an American couple telling us not to work for corporate America for about an hour at breakfast, we finally hopped back in the car and drove down to Laguna Bay to have a coffee on the beach with the beautiful people. It was such a lovely morning, very relaxing after our full on days at Disneyland. In the afternoon we went back to the hotel and felt we needed to go for a run to get rid of some of our massive calorie intake! Are you proud Sam?
We were definitely ready to head to Canada and escape our new found American environment. We have been told that Canadians or “Canuks” are much like Melbournians, so it will be nice to have a little piece of home on the next leg of the journey. We will write about Canada next time we are at a computer. Sorry this one was so long! As you know- I can definitely talk, and now apparently write as well!
Hope you are all well and enjoying Cassie being back. Hope the fires aren’t causing too many problems for anyone. Miss you all heaps. Lots of love, Mark and Susie. xox
