http://www.heygo.com 25th February - Descanso Gardens, LA

Before the area was opened to the public as Descanso Gardens, the land was an oak forest. From 1784-1869 the estate belonged to the Verdugo family and in 1937 it was bought by the owner of The Los Angeles Illustrated Daily News (Elias Manchester Boddy) in 1942.

Boddy purchased the nursery stock of two grower families, the Yoshimuras and Uyematsus, who sold their life’s work prior to their incarceration by the U.S. government after Pearl Harbour.

We only visited a small part of the garden, the oak and camellia forest, situated on 20 acres is believed to be North America’s largest collection of camellias, with 35,000 tree-sized plants growing under the canopy of 150-year-old coast live oaks.

It was a pleasant time viewing all the lovely camellias even at 11pm U.K. time.
