Geo: 33.74, -116.718Thursday morning was mostly a travelday as we drove a little over 300 miles from Phoenix to Idyllwild, California and the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. The Monument is part of the San Bernardino National Forest . Idyllwild is very much the touristy, quaint mountain village with lots of shopping and other attractions. No chain motels but quite a few mountain cabins and or inn type lodging was available. The hiking trails that start in or near Idyllwild climb from an elevation of around 6,000 feet into the San Jacinto Wilderness mountains that reach elevations of over 10,800 feet. We arrived in the early afternoon and checked in to our motel, the Idyllwild Bunkhouse, a small well kept motel on the outskirts of the village. To stretch our legs, we hiked ... read more

Twenty nine pounds. That’s what I carried on my back up a mountain. And then I slept in the woods. This season, our hiking group made two expeditions to Tahquitz Peak. At 8,846 feet in elevation, the trek is about 9-10 miles round trip. Both hikes were made from Humber Park and the Devil's Side Trail. Our first summit was on May 4, just a day trip. After an hour of downtime, we scurried up to the summit and back to camp. One of our group members actually made lemon drop shooters for everyone. Luxury, indeed. I was incredibly cold, but ... read more

May 12, 2012 Wellman Divide (9,700 ft) from Humber Park (6,100 ft). Today would mark our first official group training hike. Kyla and I had missed the last two group hikes, and this would not even compare to my first two mini-hikes. Our trail head was Humber Park in Idyllwild, with our intended destination being San Jacinto Peak, or however far we could make it. Kyla and I met the group of experienced hikers, including Scott, the primary organizer, and took off at 7:30am. Immediately upon taking to the trail I was wheezing for breath. At 6,100 feet in elevation, it was evident that this hike would be a struggle all the way. Scott kept a slow and steady pace for Kyla and me while the remaining group members trekked on ahead. It was incredible how ... read more
