Sunset Bay, Oregon
3 guys were out surfing, actually all we saw them doing was bobbing around on a board. We think that is really what surfing is about. 4,985 miles Day 64
Our last few days in Oregon were quite dramatic. A storm in the Pacific brought enormous waves to the coast line. The largest were 30-35 feet and when they crashed against the rocky shore giant plumes of spray shot up in the air. There were warnings on the local news stations about staying off break walls and jetties, so we headed out several times to watch the action from a safe distance. We took some pictures but it really is hard to capture the energy and power of the ocean.
On the 7th we left Oregon and headed down the coast to California. Highway 101 is marked by mile markers like A1A is marked in the Florida Keys. Mile mark 270 to the California border at mile 363 is one beautiful ocean vista after another with many pull offs to take in the view. It amazed us how often sandy beaches where bordered by mountains that came right to the ocean.
When we crossed into California we had to go through an agricultural inspection. Since we were from Michigan, our camper had to be inspected for Gypsy Moth. The inspector took a long time crawling under
the vehicles to take a look, and finally we were given a certificate that said we weren't contaminated. It made us feel dirty somehow to be from Michigan - no way to treat visitors, but we do understand the need.
The high waves in Oregon had also reached the California coast. On Sunday the 8th we had ridden our bikes out to the spot where it is possible to walk to the Lighthouse at a low tide. Next to that area is a high pier and also a break wall that is gated and posted with numerous signs saying - stay off Stupid this is dangerous! The signs didn't seem necessary once we saw the waves crashing over the top - HOWEVER - there were about 8 people out there, adults with little kids. We were just commenting on the stupidity of some people when the inevitable happened and a large wave came over the break wall. It knocked down one adult and swept one man and small boy off the wall and onto the rocks below . People came running to help and within 10 minutes an ambulance and fire truck had arrived and a police airplane was circling
huge waves 033
The jetty at Coos Bay, Oregon the area. The boy was badly hurt and the adult just continued to suffer from stupidity.
