Our first sight of the day was of the Little Colorado River winding in its deep vertical sided cleft through a high featureless plateau. A great taster for the main event.

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed on our first view of the Grand Canyon. On reflection I think there were two reasons for this. Firstly I had seen many photographs previously and the image was not a surprise. Secondly the canyon is so wide long and deep you don’t appreciate the scale you are looking at. However as we moved along the rim, got different views, by talking to people began to understand its many features and the evening sun brought everything into much sharper relief we realised we really were looking at a wonder of the world.

We are staying in the El Tovar Hotel, built on the south rim of the canyon in 1905 to accommodate tourists after a railway was built to here.
