Hello everyone and Happy New Year. It’s so hard to believe that six weeks have gone by since we arrived in Arizona. We have quickly realized why so many people spend their winters in this state as not only is it beautiful but the weather is wonderful.
We are so happy with the RV resort that we moved into east of Phoenix at a place called Gold Canyon. In fact we have decided to stay right here until the end of March when we will start back to Canada for the summer. Perhaps we will stay in Texas another year.
The park is only 6 years old, is very spacious, lots of room between sites, wide streets and surrounded by desert on two sides. Across the hwy. is Superstition Mountain, about 1800-2000 ft. high. There are activities everyday and a dance with a band every week It’s
BYOB and they supply the ice and popcorn!
There is a huge complex with rooms for library, exercise, billiards, computer, cards, sewing, crafts, woodworking, a large entertainment hall, swimming pool and hot tub. Also lots of golf nearby so no excuse to be bored!!
We had a very busy time over Christmas. A few anxious days awaiting the arrival of our new grandson Benjamin who finally arrived by c-section on Dec. 21st, 7lb12oz. He had to stay in hospital for a week after birth, had a little surgery but is doing great. He will be closely monitored for awhile due to a potential problem with his kidneys but so far all the plumbing seems to be working!
Our daughter Tracey and grandson Brenden arrived Dec. 18th and helped to keep us from being too homesick over the holidays. Before Christmas we traveled to Tucson and visited Old Tucson Studios where many famous movies and TV shows have been filmed.
The next day we toured some caves outside of Tucson and then on to spend the rest of the day in Tombstone which everyone has heard of!! Right? Wyatt Earp etc.
Christmas was quiet, had a pot luck dinner with about
200 other people in the park, the resort supplied the ham and everyone brought a dish, delicious meal and no cleanup!
After Christmas we went to the Golfield Ghost Town which is very near us and drove the Apache trail up to Tortilla Flats, an old stage coach town. Everything is “historic” here in the US and kept restored, that includes rivers, towns, roads, houses and just about everything else!
We left on another mini trip to the Grand Canyon with a stop to tour Flagstaff and drive along a portion of “historic” route 66. Spent the night at Tusayan, a town 1 mile from the Grand Canyon. It consists of mainly motels, restaurants, gift shops and has developed for the tourists that go the canyon every year. Our first stop in the park and our first look at the Grand Canyon was as breathtaking as described. It was so wonderful to look at something that is natural and not altered in any way. Tracey and Brenden hiked part of the trail for 11/2 hrs. and we drove to different lookouts, saw parts of the Colorado River. Looking
down at that makes you realize how far up you are. We were amazed at some of the people taking such chances to get the best possible camera shot, found out later from our neighbours that there are several every year that don’t get to see their pictures!!
A beautiful drive from there southwest to Sedona and another absolutely beautiful area of natural red rock formations. Tracey and Brenden took a jeep tour early the next morning and then after a few hours of shopping we took a driving tour of the area. Then it was off for home and spent a very quiet New Years eve, in fact we watched the apple drop in the east at ten our time and then off to bed. We’ve never felt so good on New Years day!! We celebrated Brendens birthday with steak on the barbecue, his choice!
The next few days went quickly. Tracey had a few shopping trips and had to borrow a few suitcases etc. but they got home safe and sound and not overweight!
Since then we have kept busy. We have made met a couple from Saskatchewan and spend a fair bit of time with them. We are planning a trip to Yuma in Feb. There is a former RCMP in the park who does dog sitting so will feel good leaving Copper for a few days as she can stay right in our motor home.
So, we will be in touch again and enjoy hearing from everyone so keep those e-mails coming.
