We reluctantly left the alpine-like surroundings of Ruidoso and headed back into the desert
Hello from Tucson! Yesterday we rode back into the city and so came to the end of our 4 1/2 month bike trip. It was a bittersweet moment - our bodies are ready for a rest but it's been such a fantastic trip that it's sad to be at the end. It seems a long time since we first rode out of Pukekawa on New Zealand's North Island last November, and we had no idea how the trip would go. But here we are, almost 4,000 miles later, pretty much unscathed, bikes still more or less working, and full of great memories. Instead of doing my usual description of the places we passed through during the last couple of weeks, I'll leave the photos and captions to do the talking.
I'll finish instead with a few words of thanks to all the people who made this trip so memorable: to all the warm-hearted Kiwis we encountered on both islands; our fellow cycle tourists in both NZ and the US; my parents for helping us out so much in NZ and Ken's parents for their support from afar; the six Warmshowers hosts who opened their homes to us without reservation and treated

Many of our desert lunch breaks were at disused gas stations in deserted ghost towns...classy dining!!
us like family; all our blog readers for following our travels and offering words of encouragement; and finally, but most importantly, thank you to my long suffering, wonderful husband Ken, for being my faithful travelling companion and staying by my side (literally!) for thousands of miles and many tough days! I will let him rest a little before the next trip!!
Cycle touring has become a great passion of ours and I can't think of a better way to explore the world at a slower pace and see it in so much more detail than conventional travel allows. For now we have to hop in our car and head back home to Colorado but we're already plotting out more trips for the future!
Thanks for reading...
Fi and Ken

There is some beautiful mountain scenery just outside of Albuquerque and we encountered many road cyclists out for their Sunday ride

We were running out of time so boarded the Amtrak train in Lamy, New Mexico and travelled to Flagstaff, Arizona where we started riding again

What?!!!

We couldn't believe our eyes when we woke to 8 inches of snow in Flagstaff! It was a very cold day's ride down to Cornville, with hail, wind and sleet hammering us all day. Luckily we had a Warmshowers to go to, and Pete and Geni were wonderful hosts, giving us a comfy bed, hot shower and loads of delicious food.

We came across some beautiful scenery on the way to Phoenix and a nice quiet road, which was a welcome change after riding on the Interstate

We were lucky enough to see the wildflowers in full bloom in the Sonoran desert outside of Phoenix

We couldn't believe how big Phoenix is - we were riding through it for over 70 miles!! Luckily the city has a great system of bike paths and trails which kept us away from the worst of the traffic

Gene and Dawn hosted us in Phoenix and were wonderful...they ride a tandem bike and accompanied us for 20 miles the following day to help us navigate through the city. They also had an adorable little dog called Schroeder!

This guy was pretty long but we don't think it was poisonous. It was just getting hot enough for the snakes to start coming out, but fortunately we had no rattlesnake encounters on this trip

There are thousands of aircraft here, most of which appear to be out of service...it's a bit odd.
