Grand Canyon
Matt in the Grand Canyon Well when people say that the Grand Canyon is big, you don't usually think just how big do you. Well being there really puts it into perspective.... its just HUGE. We drove there from Las Vegas and luckily the drive was not as long as the one to get to Las Vegas was. We passed over Hoover Dam on the way there which again was quite large. They are doing a lot of work on that at the moment and building a big motorway over the dam, it looked like a huge project.
The drive through was not as scenic as the drive through Death Valley, but it was still a nice drive. We got onto the famous Route 66, so we really felt like truckers! The most funny part of the day was the football trivia we had in the car. Clive asked us loads of questions....and at the end we were just listing all the premiership teams, and we got up to 20...and for some stupid reason we thought there were 22 teams...which meant we spent WAY to much time thinking up teams that arnt actually in the premiership - Doh!
We arrived early afternoon to
Grand Canyon
One of my first pictures of the Canyon the Grand Canyon national park which is just massive. It seemed to go on forever and would take a long time to get all the way through it. We were staying in a place called Thunderbird Lodge which was very nice again, each having a double bed and Sky TV....happy times. After settling into our rooms we went out to get a glimpse of the canyon. Our rooms looked right over the rim and it really was a beautiful sight.
I wasnt feeling that great to be hounest, cant remember why but I was brave and carried on with everything. We drove to a place called Mather point, which was a big thing for Andy and his parents because guess what their second name is ----- Mather! You would never have guessed ei? But it wasnt just a cool name it was a fantastic view point of the Canyon. It was our first real look into the Canyon and all of us had to take some time to really take it all in. We took loads of pictures and then realised that for the next two days our pictures would look pretty similar but oh well. It was getting
Grand Canyon
Me and Andy at Mather point late by then so we drove back to the lodge and went and had a very nice dinner. Most things in the Grand Canyon are monopolies, therefore then can choose to charge as much as they want to because there are so few of them, glad me and Andy wernt there on our own.
Day two in the Grand Canyon got off to a "flying start".....ok so you guessed it, after a very small breakfast we went to the small Grand Canyon airport and got a HELICOPTER over the Canyon - wowowowowowowowow! All i can say was that it was such a fantastic experience, and apparently I spent the whole trip just smiling. I was quite nervous before hand as everyone has told me that helicopters are terribly bumpy and make you feel sick, but thats a load of nonsense.
When we walked outside towards the helicopter we had our pictures taken and then got closer to it. I didnt realise just how loud these things were as we couldnt hear a thing till we got our headphones on (Bose headphone - top notch!). I was siting next to the window so had the perfect view, which
was great as we could see for miles. Grand Canyon national park is massive, seriously massive. They played all the cheesy flying music in our headphones while we were cruising along nicely, and we then finally got across the Canyon. All I can say about it, is "Do it people!", it looked stunning, huge, beautiful, scary, calm, wild....and im just starting. We took some amazing videos and pictures. It was fantastic experience that I didnt think I would ever be able to experience.
After this we got back to the lodge, collected our bags and went down the 'Angel Trail', which is a popular walkway down the Canyon. It was a hard trek, but we did it in lightening fast time. It was great to compare that to seing it from the air, it was so different but not worse at all, you get a perspective for size when you are standing inside the Canyon.
The Canyon is a great and expensive experience...but totally worth it all. We got to see so much of it and its something I will really never forget. Hope you like some of the picies!
