Meteor Crater
Durham took most of the pictures at the crater. I was having a little trouble breathing at the altitude. 5-3-09 We attended Camp Verde UMC this morning and heard the best tything sermon we ever heard. After church we had to hurry home to get out of the campground since our space was promised for Sunday after lunch. We had a pretty good trip up to Flagstaff. The mountains were rather steep a couple over 6% but we made it safely. We had decided to stay at Ft. Tuthill the Luke AFB campground. We had looked at it last year but didn't realize how unlevel the sites were. We had to jack the coach up till the back wheels were off the ground so we only stayed a few days.
5-4-09 Years ago when Ron and I were in this area we stopped at the Meteor Crater and were not impressed, so last year we didn't stop. When we visited Marty in Mesa she said she had been and it was really interesting so we decided to check it out this year. It was way different than I remembered. They have a museum, show a movie and have nice walkways to the rim of the crater. We really enjoyed it.
5-5-09 Today was rather different. Many of you
Hills near Tuba City
Driving east on AZ route 160 a couple miles west of Tuba City may not know that Arizona doesn't do daylight savings time so the sun comes up about 5 AM. I had gotten up early since it was so light that Max thought it was time to be fed. We got ready and went into town to pick up a couple things and realized we got there before the stores opened. Can you even imagine me out and about before the stores opened? We did some running arround and fixed a few things arround the coach getting ready for morning departure.
5-6-09 We only traveled a couple hours north today. We saw amazing changes in the scenery for such a short distance. We will be staying on the Navajo Nation for a few days at a town named Tuba City. Some of the scenery like the picture we took is unbelievable. I think some of this area is prettier than the Painted Desert.
5-7-09 Today was awsome. We went to the Grand Canyon. We had been to part of the canyon a couple years ago but this time we came in the east entrance. The size of it is unimagineable. I've
Durham & Elaine at the edge
We took a picture for another couple and they returned the favor. always had a problem with heights but was able to get near the edge much better this time. We also stopped at the little Colorado River Canyon, which was also amazing. At the little Colorado there were some Navajos selling necklaces, vases etc. that they had made. They make some very beautiful things. It was a long drive much of which was 7000 feet and above. It's amazing the difference 2000 feet can make. I got very tired but as we descended to 4 to 5 thousand feet I felt much better. We only took 64 pictures but we thined it down to only58 to keep.
5/8/09 We visited the Navajo Museum in tuba city and went to a place called elephant feet. The museum was very interesting and included a part about the wind talkers. We had a map that showed where the elephant feet were supposed to be but as we tried to follow the map we found most of the roads were not marked. We passed what we thought was it but it was on the only marked road and it was not the one on the map so we went further.
Another overlook
There were so many amazing views it was hard to select one for the blog. After a while we turned back and took the picture before returning to town.
5/9/09 We moved on from Tuba City to Page today. It wasn't a long trip so after we got settled we went to a senic overview not far from camp. It was nice but once we parked we had to hike way down to the canyon then back. (Down was fairly easy but up was another story in the heat.) The canyon was where the Colorado River leaves Lake Powell. After we hiked back to the car we checked out where the church was. There must have been a dozen right together along the same street.
5/10/09 Afer church we went up to Lake Powell to check about lake cruises, then up to Big Water, UT to a visitor information center ( it turned out to be a BLM visitor center not state). We need to start planning the next part of the trip. Over all we had a great mothers day.
5/11/09 We took a cruise on lake Powell today. The lake is 186 miles long and they said it has over
Elephants Feet
These rocks really do look a lot like elephant's feet even if there are only two of them instead of four. 2,000 miles of shore line. Of course we only saw a very small part of it but we were out about 3 hours. We only visited 2 of the over 100 canyons on the lake. I think Durham enjoyed his birthday.
