Should I be disappointed that the miles per day are dropping off and today I did not cross a state border? Nah, it's what has happened along the way and how you feel at the end of the day that counts. The day started brilliantly with fresh squeezed orange juice and avocado toast. You gotta love Flagstaff. Poking around the hotel before I left I discovered that Michael Stripe had stayed there. He was the lead singer songwriter with REM and the voice behind Everybody Hurts, possibly my all time favorite song. I could not ask for more, until, recall yesterday I met Beth and Mel. Beth told me she was a big time AirBnB host. Today my buddy Rob, who is following the blog from where he lives in Tucson, texted me that he and ... read more

We had a lot of miles to cover to our next stop point so we broke them up with a series of one-night journey-breakers. We were almost fully recovered from our colds, and were really enjoying travelling on the desert byways and the landscape and scenery was so different it was fascinating. Bring it on! We left Roswell on Route 380, heading towards Hondo on a wonderfully empty dual carriageway road beneath blue skies. There were very few signs of habitation and the tiny hamlets we passed through had a mix of falling-down, ramshackle houses or very nice property indeed. Around Picacho and Hondo the landscape began to green up and the terrain became hilly and forested and we drove along part of the Scenic Billy the Kid Trail when we turned on to the I-70. ... read more

MINERAL CITY In 1866 when the capricious Colorado shifted its channel and left the bustling community of La Paz high and dry a committee of local miners and merchants agreed to hire Herman Ehrenberg to locate new dock facilities. Herman found a suitable site six miles downstream and for good measure surveyed a town site. The committee called the new place Mineral City. By 1870 the placer diggings at La Paz had played out and most of the miners had moved on to better prospects. The local merchants had relocated to Mineral City for better access to the river. Herman Ehrenberg in the meantime had gone to San Francisco in order to try and raise money for the foundering La Paz placers. He was making his way back to La Paz by stagecoach along the Bradshaw ... read more

LA PAZ Pauline Weaver, that old fur trapper, trader, scout, prospector and scamp discovered gold nuggets in a wash on the Arizona side of the Colorado River in January of 1862. Those nuggets triggered the Colorado River Gold Rush. A bustling community of 1500 soon popped up in the wash like a wildflower after a rain. The town came to be known as La Paz and was the largest gathering of people in the state. It was booming and rich and between 1864 and 1870 it became the seat of Yuma County. After separate territorial status was finally granted to Arizona in 1863 La Paz was a leading contender for the territorial capitol. While the political hacks were still arguing about it the gold placers at La Paz began to play out. The district had produced ... read more

We stopped at Coach Care in Phoenix to get the motorcoach's annual service. We found ourselves in the middle of an eight-lane interstate with semis merging left and right. Sandwiched inbetween, we got side-swipped twice. Our first (and hopefully last) traffic event. Even though our passenger side-view mirror was hit, in Tom's words, "We're still alive!." Thank you Lord. Since that didn't kill us I mapped us to Ehrenberg and reserved a Kawasaki ATV for a day of play. Steve Berns, the General Manager at River Breeze RV Resort graciously offered to show us his desert. Now the cost of this was very reasonable even BEFORE Steve offered to come. He really knows this part of the desert and showed us a thrilling afternoon. Reminicsent of ATVing with our friend Kat at Verde Valley Thousand Trails, ... read more

The bad part is that I was in bed two days with a cold. I’m no fun to be around when I’m down with a bug. Acerbic, is a descriptive adjective for it. The ugly is that the black holding tank on Uncle Joe is stopped up, and the tank is full. Aaargh. We have a service coming by this afternoon to see if they can suction the tank, one way or the other. This is just part of the RVing adventure. Post Script The suction truck came by and got things flowing again after a miss, a miss and finally a hit. What a relief. We won’t have to hike down to the community restrooms during the night, as we did during the day. I’m staying up long enough to eat supper, and then I’m ... read more

No sugar plums dancing about; that was the toddy flag snapping in the breeze as we opened our gift to each other. Johnny Walker Black Label; a big bottle of it; our holiday gift to each other! Can Christmas get any better? There was a community supper last night at the River Breeze RV Resort. Our contribution was some of Nan’s famous guacamole. I rode her coat tail on this one. For several days before the event, folks staying at the RB signed up to bring a food contribution to the gathering. It all worked out pretty well, and it was fun to sample the many offerings from folk attending the gathering. We have a few Canadians wintering with us; eh? After a nice dinner and before the gift exchange, I entertained the crowd with my ... read more

We started looking ahead to our next destination. We will be in Ehrenberg about two more weeks, and we want to see another part of the desert southwest. Frustrated with what seemed available based on online research of RV parks in Tucson, we made a daytrip to El Centro, CA; we visited Sun Beam Lakes RV Resort and the Rio Bend RV and Golf Resort. The drive was about 100 miles on Hwy 78 south from Blythe, CA through some farming and hay growing areas that are irrigated by water from the Colorado River. After Palo Verde, the highway became a twisting rollercoaster affair through wild, undulating desert. It is an understatement to say there was a bit of wind. There was a lot of wind. In one area, the desert turned into sand dunes, and ... read more
