On Thursday we took the Glacier Bay boat tour offered by the lodge. The tour boat left from the dock down the hill from the lodge and travelled all the way to the head of the bay, passing lots of marine life as well as beautiful inlets, with valleys obviously formed by the glaciers that either were still there or were recently there. Some of the glaciers are actually still advancing, though most are retreating. Just two hundred years ago the whole bay was covered in glacial ice fed by the huge ice field above the bay. The ice field is still there, just not so large, and still sends it's icy glacial fingers into the bay in a few spots. Took a huge number of pictures on this trip and, though the weather was overcast and most pictures did not turn out great, I'll post a few of the better one here. Also, I'll try to post a video and, if you look really closely you can see a whale's tail break the water in the distance just above and to the right of the guy in the red jacket, over the heads of the people watching with

One of only 2 tidal glaciers in the bay. A tidal glacier is one with its foot in the water, thus it 'calves' ice into the bay.

The other tidal glacier in the Bay. This one only had its toe in the bay at high tide.

After we returned from the boat tour we hiked this short 2 mile trail near the lodge.
