(Erin here.) The thing that all the hikes we've done in Alaska seem to have in common is that they begin in the trees. Dense, mossy, jungle-like trees. In Haines, Sean and I completed a 5.6 mile roundtrip hike to the summit of Mount Riley (elevation 1,759 feet). The first 2.5 miles were pretty unchanging, with lots of steps made from tree roots, and heavy foliage with leaves the size of dinner plates. But by the final few tenths of a mile, we could see incredible views of the Chilkat Range and the Lynn Canal. We also had clear views of the two prominent hanging glaciers. As usual, the 360-degree view made the climb worth the effort!
