Being big fans of the TV show The Edge of Alaska the town of McCarthy was high on our list of places to visit even though it was late in our trip. When the time finally came of course so did the weather, for a solid three days. But our reservations were made well in advance so we were going to go, rain or shine. What we discovered is a trip to McCarthy is really a combination of three different intertwined events: The Road, The Town, The Mine. First, The Road: From our RV site it took about an hour of scenic paved Alaskan highway system roads to get to the small town of Chitna. At the end of the highway you’re greeted by the warning signs about the next 62 miles of your journey. Of ... read more

Today we went ice climbing! And it was cool! We met our guide for the day, Max, and he outfitted us with boots, crampons, harnesses and gloves. We hiked to the Root Glacier and Max made a couple stops on the way to explain what to do in the off chance we meet a bear (I won't keep you in suspense - we didn't), he showed us a boulder that was carried down from way up in the mountains by the glacier (the First Nation peoples have a better story - they were put there by giants in case of war, so they'd have rocks to throw at the enemy). We got to the glacier and put on our boots and crampons under Max's tutelage. He showed us how to walk on the glacier, it's not ... read more

We left Valdez made a short stop at the information center. It was open this time, and they have explanations on the process of fish raising at the hatchery. Now we understand what we saw yesterday. They also had some animal skins and the kids wore bear skins. We made the long drive to Chitina, with an emergency gas stop along the way at a tiny gas station with one pump in the middle of nowhere. We went on our way uneventfully and got to the Chitina airstrip, and within a few minutes our plane came for us, a tiny one propeller plane with just enough room for the four of us and the pilot. Tamar got to be the copilot, and Ethan will co-fly the plane back. That was a fun flight! A bit bumpy, ... read more

Today is River Raft trip day! Cold cereal, milk, fruit and I am ready to go. I am sure to take an extra layer of clothing since the nice day starting out does not necessarily equate to a beautiful afternoon. I include rain gear just in case. We are late summer and heading into their fall. I decide to treat myself to parking down at the footbridge today. I have this great conversation with the gentleman attendant there. He gives me some of the local gossip and then I am disappointed to find out I will miss open mic night at the town Saloon tomorrow night which he tells me is an absolute hoot and also Friday night baseball which is a weekly town event, not just a game! These are exactly the types of events ... read more

I am combining Days 8 and 9 because of very low activity. Day 8 started with the muscle weakness that tells me I’m pushing it so I was very glad I had not signed up for that guided nine mile hike!! I still have to think I’ll be able to build up more stamina in spite of this possibly being an indication it can’t happen. I’ll go forward with confidence it can until truly proven otherwise. Anyway, I never left the cabin. I used the rest filled time to get a lot done in reviewing travel routes and times for the trip overall which I had not gotten to before leaving home. It was a good thing too because I would have been short for time allowance by a couple of hours on some of the ... read more

Slept in just a little bit this morning and then made bacon and eggs. I opened my door to go out on the deck and there lay the most beautiful Malamute I have seen just laying there ever so relaxed. We had a Malamute years ago and had always been one of our favorites. So I thought it was maybe some carma that this particular dog was laying right on my deck right outside the door. I gave her some attention and then grew suspicious that the real reason she was there was because I had just fried bacon and the windows were open. I try to dismiss that theory in favor of the good carma theory but even I know it's likely the true reason she is there. I get a hold of the owner ... read more

Mixed emotions today as I need to bid farewell to Brenda, Diane and the kids (the dogs) to move on to McCarthy. I'd be happy to stay longer but yet there is that need to continue the journey. Another wonderful breakfast by Brenda including spinach quiche and then I take some time to at least get Day 4 of the travel blog finished before departing. Then I bid a very fond farewell to Brenda and each of her dogs. It has been a marvelous stay and should I ever get back to Alaska again, I will definitely look to stay at Matanuska Lodge. I continue to recommend to all though keep in mind it is not a kid-friendly place by Brenda's own admission. If you are a single, couple, or small adult group though, I very ... read more

“There is one word of advice and caution to be given those intending to visit Alaska...If you are old, go by all means, but if you are young, wait. The scenery of Alaska is much grander than anything else of its kind in the world, and it is not wise to dull one’s capacity for enjoyment by seeing the finest first”. (Henry Gannett, Harriman Alaska Expedition 1899) If you choose to take a package holiday to Europe, people do not urge you to read ‘that book’ about the young man who died where you are going! Alaska is different. After much indecision, my husband Chris and I read “Into the Wild,” just before going into the Alaskan wilderness ourselves. However, we city slickers managed to survive the Alaskan Wilderness. We saw wolf, moose & even Harrison ... read more

As part of our mid life crisis gap year, my husband and I thought it would be cool to celebrate the 4th of July in Alaska. We chose McCarthy/ Kennicott, two small towns at the end of 60 mile white knuckle drive on a gravel road, circled by mountains and glaciers on the edge of the Alaskan wilderness in the Wrangell / St Elias national Park. McCarthy has approximately 24 permanent year round inhabitants who brave the minus 50 winter temperatures. The resident population swells a little in summer with people who choose to spend their summers servicing the tourists in the one bar, hotel, mercantile and takeaway. Most leave to live somewhere warmer in winter. McCarthy looks like the film set of a classic Hollywood western. It also has a really peaceful vibe, perhaps because ... read more
