On Exchange

Here's a big view of where I was last semester connected to where I am now (in Wilmington, North Carolina).

I was thinking of the states that I've briefly visited in the US and decided to put them on a map (seen below). I looked at Alaska filled in red and decided to add some photos from my past year and a half as a student at the University of Alaska Southeast.

A beautiful sunny day in Juneau, AK right by the University of Alaska Southeast campus.

A rare moment in Juneau when the sun was shining. This is a picture I took while laying on the Auke Bay dock and looking up at the sun on my first visit to campus in July of 2005.

A view of the courtyard at UAS housing. We had over 89 inches of snow in just 4-5 weeks.

A shot of almost all of the UAS campus. Most of the few buildings the campus has are made of wood and are built up behind the trees on the left side of the road. Not in this picture is the Mourant building and Egan library.

This is a picture of the Mourant building where I spend most of my time because in it is my coffee supplier, Mourant Cafe. This building was named after a former UAF student that sadly died in a plane crash on August 18th only a few years after he graduated.

Here is the view from my apartment room last semester. It was a beautiful view.

Another shot of the glacier when it was sunny outside. This photo was taken from a small cabin on the opposite side of the visitor's center.

I love this picture of one of the sailboats in Auke Bay Harbor. The mast was so tall that you could see it while walking up the two hills to UAS Student Housing.

A beautiful picture of Auke Bay harbor at sunset. The UAS campus is a ten minute walk up the hill from this small bay that is part of the Alaskan Inside Passage. Photo by Victoria Phillips

A nice shot of one of the campus banners with UAS emblem on it. This year marked the 50th year anniversary for UAS.

Native stuff

Native totem poles along the streets in Juneau. Alaska has a very deep and rich native culture that is still thriving today.

One of several murals painted on the sides of buildings around Juneau. The painting includes a raven which is a native animal considered to be very sneaky and deceitful.

A really pretty mural of whales on the side of a building. There are many whales along the Inside Passage including humpbacks and orcas. Above the painting is a sign for the Silverbow Inn which is actually a small restaurant with excellent bagels and free movie nights.

One of my favorite buildings in town because of the stars that are also part of the Alaskan state flag.
