Sunday July 15, 2007 We had to get up early to get the 8:00 am ferry to Haines; supposed to be there 2 hours before departure time. The early morning was clear with blue sky and a promise of sunshine. On the way to the ferry (15 minute trip) we saw a black bear coming out of a backyard dragging a large garbage bag. He was leaving a trail of litter as he made for the woods. I fumbled for the camera and got one shaky photo before he disappeared. By the time we arrived at the ferry terminal the blue sky was gone and fog had settled in. The ferry left on time and there was a lot less confusion and waiting than for the Prince Rupert ferry. The Fairweather is a double hulled ... read more

Haines, AK pop.1,525 This town deserves more description than I gave it in our last blog. We planned to stay 2 nights and ended up staying a week. Its 152 miles south from the Alaska Highway. It’s only at the end (or beginning) of the Haines Highway. To go anywhere else from Haines in a car is by ferry. A few days a week, a small cruise ship docks for the day. There’s not the big influx of tourists that is seen in other towns. The drive on the Haines Highway is scenic with snow capped mountains and rivers running along side the road. In some places they are obscured by aspens and evergreen trees. At that point it’s easy to feel that you’re on some other northern road until the next bend when the ... read more

Hello all, well the weather has done a U-turn and we are enjoying some great sunshine. Haines really comes into its own when the sun is shining. Managed to get out on the boat yesterday to check the crab pots. 12 in total for ourselves and that was after throwing 12 back in and giving 18 away! We are heading across the border to Canada tomorrow so another stamp in the passport. Heading to a place called Millenium Falls for a picnic, suppose to be quite impressive, lets hope the sunshine holds out. Hope every one is well and we are working on those photos...promise!... read more

hey, another great day in haines. we took the boat out into the chilkoot for some fishing. we dropped two lines, one for salmon and another for halibut. nothing was biting so left them out over night so will check them later. we also put out the crab cages and caught four males and a female. they have rules in alaska that protects the fishing so had to throw the female back and kept the males. We then took them to craig and josie (manuel and laura friends) for dinner, tried the crab, its an acquired taste. on our way home we stopped off at a river and managed to watch a brown bear fishing for salmon. another eventful day!! ... read more

Well after a night in Seattle and Juneau, the capital of Alaska, we have arrived in Haines. Laura and Manuel have a wonderful house in the forest and when we go out for walks we have to take a gun for protection from the bears! But its so beautiful with snow capped mountains on either side. Matilda is as lovely as ever and I'm sure will provide endless amusement! Have to say its nice to have some home comforts (and we've only been away for a week!). Anyway hope all are well and will try and download some photos soon. Frankie and Neil... read more

At the northern end of the inside passage taken by cruise ships and the Alaska Marine Highway System (ferries) is a narrow fiord. On the west side of the fiord sits the town of Haines, and on the east side lays Skagway. These towns originated in the late 19th century as jumping-off places for those adventurous souls seeking their fortune in the numerous gold stampedes. From Skagway they made the arduous climb over the White Pass into the Yukon Territory and the Klondike Gold fields. From Haines the trail led to the Alaskan mining areas of Fairbanks and beyond. These towns are only a few miles apart by boat, but over 400 miles by road, and they are as different as night and day. Haines, while it has bars, restaurants, etc., has retained the feel ... read more

African Proverb Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better start running. July 1, 2, & 3 2005, Friday. This was an early get-up, 4am. The ferry leaves at 7am but we need to check in and be in line 2 hrs prior. So we made breakfast in the ferry line, nice to have our home with us, and kept falling asleep waiting for the boat to depart. We were on the high speed Fairhaven again and arrived in Haines ... read more
