We made it to Anchorage last Tuesday, actually early Wednesday morning at about 1am on 10/9. We drove about 15 hours from Whitehorse -- we were finally ready to get off the road & make it into Anchorage. I'm still settling in at my new place. Ken and I are painting the apartment, so I haven't even unloaded any of my stuff from my truck yet. The apartment is in downtown Anchorage, so there's a lot of stuff within walking distance. For the most part, I feel like I'm living in any city -- except that it's cold (mostly in the 20's the last couple of days) & there are views of the mountains around every corner. I do miss everyone at home, so please keep in touch. You can send me a message through the ... read more

The obstacle is the path.-----Zen aphorism July 21,2005, Thursday. Let me tell you about Alaska’s 19 hours of sunlight. It is hard to get used to. We are now down to 18hrs and 38 mins of sunlight. On rainy days it is no problem, but on nice bright sunny days it is tough to sleep. I have gone the way of “Greta Garbo”, and sleep with an eye-mask; it is wonderful. It is sunny at 11 PM, this is sunset, not dark!!! And the sun is back up at 4 AM. Now in your mind convert this to winter??? That is 19 hours of darkness! I don’t think I will visit in winter. Well we left the campground for a bike ride in the morning. Alaska is amazing; it has bike trails everywhere. There ... read more

A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.---John A. Shedd July 19, 2005, Tuesday. We drove from Chugach S.P. campground to Anchorage. Costco was our first stop to burn a CD of the photos in our digital cameras. It seems to work best when we do it that way; otherwise, they seem to get lost in the shuffle. Once they are on a CD it is safe to clear off the memory card and start snapping again. We had heard some good things about the Anchorage Museum of Natural History. The good comments were well deserved. It is a wonderful museum tracing the history of Alaska, with lots of artifacts, clothing, winter gear, kayaks, hunting gear, photos, exhibits, etc. We even had a side trip: “The Shamans: Spirit ... read more

Four things come not back: the spoken word, the spent arrow, the past, the neglected opportunity.----------Omar Ibn Al-Halif July 10, 2005, Sunday. It is a beautiful sunny day and we are off to Anchorage to explore. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city. The old town is an interesting walk and soon we found the market center. Walking around the booths, of course we purchased some trinkets and gifts. It is really quite a large market area complete with music. After a stop at the ulu store for some more purchases, we set out to find a bike rental. The Coastal Trail, a bike/hike paved surface, follows the coastline along the mud flats. Lots of birds, ducks, etc, we stopped at Earthquake Park. A memorial to the Good Friday earthquake of March 27, 1964, the most powerful ... read more

We flew into Anchorage Airport on Thursday 16th June. It was a beautiful day. we wandered around and watched a band in the park then had great Sushi. WE arrived just in time for the summer Solstice weekend so it was light till 12pm. We meet a German Girl at the hostel and she offered to take us to Seward the nest day. It was a lovely drive to Seward sown through the cook inlet. We tried to spot some Beluga Whales in the Cook Inlet. We thought we saw some one breathing but it could have been a wave. We also stopped off at a big game refuge park and saw some Moose, Grizzly Bears, Bison, Elk, Caribou, Fox, Bald Eagle and an owl up close. The nest day at Seward we went out on ... read more

June 13, 2005 - Sunrise 4:24 am - Sunset 11:37 pm - High 70 F The past week or two has been pretty eventful. It started out with a "fun jump"/picnic. My whole company jumped from C130's (that's a medium sized cargo plane) and landed on the drop zone where the wives, children, and soldiers who couldn't jump had set up a picnic. It was a pretty fun day. The mosquitos were again quite impressive. I saw a small child carried away and drained like a raisen. Best of all, no one got hurt on the jump. I may not have explained yet the dynamics of a military jump. On TV, and in the civilian world, we see sky divers steer themselves around the sky and float in for a feather light landing. Well, the Army ... read more

May 26, 2005 - Sunrise 4:43am - Sunset 11:09pm - Actual Dark Hours 12:45am-3:30am Today is our third anniversery, and we celebrated last weekend by going to Seward for the weekend. I can't tell you how beautiful this state is. Some of you asked me to see more pictures of the landscape up here, and I will not disappoint. Highlights Before we get to Seward, lets hit the highlights of the last couple of weeks. First, I completed my combatives course and tied for third place in the honor graduate tournament. My body hurt for the next week. Then, I took a week long combat first aid course and learned to give IV's and shove tubes up peoples noses. The interesting part about that is we practiced on each other. I got three IV's and ... read more
