I was on a total of four buses to get from Real de Catorce to Zacatecas. I arrived there a little after 9pm, and the town looked amazing at night. Luckily the hostal (Hostal Villa Colonial) had some open beds. $9 a night with an amazing view of the whole town. Zacatecas has one of the coolest cathedrals in all of Mexico, a lot of museums, and a cable car (teleferico) that takes you to the top of La Cerra de la Bufa, a hill/mountain on one side of the bowl shaped city. One of the oldest silver mines in North America is here. It goes seven levels down under ground. The first few levels are flooded, so the tour takes you four levels down. After over a month in Mexico we are now officially sick of the buses. Always with movies being played but often competing with the drivers radio. And frequently we are arriving at our destination before the movie is finished. Hmm. Zacatecas is set in the hills at around 2500 meters but it was surprisingly warm. We stayed at the Hotel Condesa which was quite pleasant. Unlike Guadalajara this town had a lovely feeling. The streets were busy with vendors and the stone buildings ranged in colour from orange to pink. The cathedral was particularly spectacular. We found a lot of upmarket shopping and didn't see any other foreigners. We saw some people protesting outside the government buildings and guessed that the tractors we had passed heading into town had something to do with it. And sure ... read more

I arrived in Zacatecas after a 9 hour bus ride which was supposed to take only 5 hours (I guess I better get used to Mexican time!). I arrived at about 9 PM and it was pouring rain once again while I was looking for somewhere to stay. After about an hour of looking for a place, I stumbled upon Hostel Villa Cononial, which would become my home for the next three nights. The hostel was an amazing bargain about 9 bucks per night with a rooftop patio that had a view of the city like NO OTHER and was located right in the city center!! The city takes it's name from the local Zacatecos tribe, part of the Chichmec group of tribes. This tribe was extracting mineral deposits long before the Spanish arrived. My pal Linda and I escaped from our industrial city and took an overnight 9 hour bus ride to the city of Zacatecas. It was cool travelling with Linda because we got to know each other, she's adventurous and into tasting and sharing food too. It was a good weekend that I needed to just see a beautiful place, have fun, and experience being in a less corporate Mexico. We arrived at 8 AM saturday and took the public bumpy bus to our hostal. We decided to stop for Mexican breakfast. I had tamales, eggs, fresh OJ, tea, and Mexican sweet breads. We took a long walk around the city checking out toursity things.
