Today was the first of many long driving days. We left at 06:45 to have breakfast at a local market in Uman. We had panuchos (with beans) and salbutes (no beans) and a fresh fruit platter. Even though it was fried it still hit the spot. A meat market was next door so we went and took a look. It’s really not that much different from traditional markets in China and while some may question the lack of refrigeration I am sure the locals do just fine with them.

We were on the road again, this time stopping by Uxmal ruins. It’s of puuc-style architecture and many buildings are open to climbing. We had a great view from the governor’s residence, seeing the top of some of the other structures just peeping above the tree top. We also climbed the great pyramid. There were a few iguanas sunning themselves around the ruins. We tried to find the north group of ruins but got lost because there were too many forks in the trail and eventually gave up.

For lunch we stopped by a seaside restaurant in Chompoton, at the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Just prior to that

we got stopped by a police, apparently because he got annoyed at our driver honking to say hi to his friend. He walked around our van several times, trying to find anything wrong and eventually told the driver to get his tire pressure checked. I am sure there were bigger fish to catch in Chompoton!

It was a long ride to Palenque after our late lunch. By this time I had moved to the back of the van since there were others in need of the front seats. I didn’t mind the location but the back was like a sauna despite air conditioning blasting because for some reason it was directed toward the front and we got nothing in the last row. It eventually got better after the sun set but it was an unpleasant 4.5 - 5 hours. Most people were too tired by this time and just went to bed. A few of us decided to do a walkabout and we found tacos for 6 pesos each, and they were good too! Our hotel Hotel Canana Internacional was interesting in that it doesn’t have real flights of stairs; instead, the rooms are arranged in a spiral around
