Izamal
Today we got the buss to the city of Izamal (the city if hills), it is located right in the middle of the peninsula. It is one of the oldest city’s in Yucatan and it’s history is attached to religious events. Izamal was conquered by the Spaniards. We went to the Franciscan Convent that was built from and over one of the Mayan pyramids. It is also famous the story of the monk Fray Diego de Lamdo, it’s founder who burned all Indian scripts, and feeling remorse for what he had done, tried to write all he could remember of the ways of Indians in the ‘Relation of Things of the Yucatan’. Pope John Paul II visited Izamal in 1993 and held a special meeting and mass specifically for the Indigenous people in the area. Most of the buildings are painted an egg-yolk yellow, making the entire town look amazing. There are Mayan pyramids in the centre of town and we had a look at a few of them before getting the buss back to Merinda.
