This entry is por mi amiga Carly y tambien proveer la informacion de mi research in preparation por mi viaja. Only the dates in the first 10 dias are firm, the rest of the places are are on my list at some point during my journey. Arrive in Puebla at 8:15 en la noche en 25 del octubre. I have reservations at this hotel Hotel colonial, Puebla The address and lots of pictures of the hotel are on the link, not cheapest place in town, but I like to err on the side of caution when coming into a city I have never been to before, especially at night. Also got good reviews in Thorn Tree for what that's worth. Then on the 26th I plan to begin some intensive Spanish lessons here en Alixto SchoolAlixto ... read more

Hope all is well with everybody and I welcome your news and comments. I realized my last post on violence was rather heavy-handed with several generalizations. I report my observations and feelings as they arrive. Please take the lighthearted with the heavy. My 6 weeks in central Mexico has come to an end and I have headed for the Gulf coast and the southern rainforests. I sadly bid farewell to the Castillos in Ameca. I had a wonderful month there, being welcomed by a great family and making life-long friends. It was without a doubt an invaluable experience. I was both reluctant to move on but excited to explore the rest of the country. Just east of the states of Mexico and Puebla is Veracruz. Lush, verdant, gorgeous Veracruz. I was blown away by the views ... read more

So this weekend I went on a two day trip to Veracruz and Xalapa (home of the Jalapeño!). While in Xalapa we visited a museum that has many Olmec heads and other pre-hispanic artifacts. The heads were really interesting and about as tall as I am. While in Veracruz we stayed at a beach front hotel that was quite fancy. I got up at 7:30 Sunday morning and walked on my first real beach! I also touched the ocean! (It was really the Gulf Of Mexico but the way I consider it ocean because it is the same water and I have never been to the ocean so close enough!) Sunday afternoon we went to an old prison/fortress. I probably would have enjoyed it more had it not been 90 degrees with 780% humidity. In order ... read more

I had two reasons for wanting to venture, seemingly way off of the "gringo trail", to the gulf coast state of Veracruz, the jungle enshrouded ruins of El Tajín and the once mighty fortress of San Juan De Ulúa, but I found so much more than I expected. During the bus ride I watched the scenery change from the parched, desert-like landscape surrounding Mexico City and the pine forests on its fringes to dense tropical vegetation of such a fierce, glowing green that I almost had to shield my eyes from its brilliance - I finally made it to the jungle! The tropical forests of the Veracruz state were a major hardship and obstacle to the early Spanish colonists, bringing with its hot, humid climate, fun diseases like yellow fever and the ever popular malaria. The ... read more

Well it is now 2006 so let me start off by saying that I hope all reading this will be blessed beyond degree this year. With that said let me tell you how we brought the New Year in. Suzanne and I returned to GTO on the 28th of December after spending Christmas season with our family in Indy and Ohio. Now the original plan was to spend New Year’s Eve in Puerto Vallarta or La Manzanilla, both of which are located on the Pacific Coast side of Mexico. The temperature in this region is like 83-90 degrees in December, beautiful white sand beaches, and baby blue water. So to make this a good time I went to a travel agent to make our hotel and travel accommodations. Well I had no idea how popular this ... read more

ENG/ESP/SLO Nanciyaga, Veracruz, Mèxico Aug 7, 2005 A MAGIC PLACE IN THE JUNGLE Right now I am lying in a hammock writing these words in the middle of the magic Tuxtla´s jungle 700kms away from Mexico City. Last week was very intense. Learning Japanese, searching for sponsors for my ticket and in the middle of these intense efforts, I received an e mail from a friend I met last week: -“You can´t leave Mexico until you have tried the Temazcal in Nanciyaga, Veracruz. I invite you this weekend, we leave the day after tomorrow. I have the tickets and the cabin confirmation…” This mail arrived like a big surprise. I answered: -“Cool, it looks perfect… See you on Thursday then.” Departure: 00.00 hrs from the City of Caos toward peace. Arrival: 08:00am to the region of ... read more

In the farming hills of Vera Cruz state, about 50 K from the Gulf of Mexico, I found silence and livestock rolling in the grass. You need a compass up there to navigate because there are no road signs to speak of. Coffee producing mountain towns like Coatapec and Xico, about 10 km from Jalapa (Xalapa), offer unusual access to rural life.... read more
