Well I've been in Mexico for 4.5 weeks now and thats half the trip done. Crazy how quickly time goes. As you know I was meant to be in Oaxaca for a few extra weeks but plans changed and I decided I'd go and see a bit more of the country. Choice was between Veracruz and Villahermosa. Villahermosa lost out due to the fact I couldn't find a hostel there (the 13 hour bus ride wasn't too appealing either). So got the bus at midnight to arrive on the Friday morning. Had 2 seats to myself so was in a position to get some sleep...that was until we stopped about a million times for different things...the worst being an army checkpoint high in the mountains where we had to get off and have our bags searched. Wouldn't have been all bad except that it was 2C and it took a good 5 minutes of freezing before we were allowed back on the bus. Anyways a lot of stopping at random towns later to drop people off made it to Veracruz at about 7.30am. I ring the hostel I'm staying at as they pick you up from the bus station...of course the
owners Australian...we're bloody everywhere. Its meant to be a party hostel but its only been open a few weeks so only a few of staying there. Nonetheless lots of drinking and smoking shesha has been involved.
First day in Veracruz I didn't get up to much, caught up with sleep I didn't get on bus then some beers. Saturday was better...went to the Zocalo and for a walk along the malecon. Veracruz is very different to the other parts of Mexico I've been to so far. All the other parts have felt very safe and not at all seedy...Veracruz is the opposite, its sketchy and dirty and hot. But who cares about that, the people are still great. After wondering round for the day, and being approached to buy all sorts of weird things (a guy was selling shrimp in a bucket), went back and got ready for night out. This is one thing Veracruz definitely has going for it...the nightlife. A lot of places require you to buy a bottle of spirits to even get a table but we went to somewhere a little bit more lowkey, by lowkey I mean the place was still packed and the
music blaring, but apparently the more expensive places get up to 3000 people at them a night and go till 7am. After that went to a salsa bar for a bit and didn't dance because you know Mexicans are fucking incredible dancers and making a fool of myself wasn't high on my want list.
Sunday was more relaxed, as in I slept till 4pm, went out for dinner and to watch my Mexican football team...yes I've picked a team...I support Jaguears de Chiapas...quite possibly the worst team in LigaMX..as proven by throwing away a 3-2 lead to a 4-3 loss in the last 4 minutes. Early night after that as Monday planned to go to the state capital of Veracruz (surprisingly the city Veracruz is not the capital(, Xalapa. I wanted to go here because there's an awesome anthropology museum apparently second to only the one in Mexico City. Monday morning on the bus arrives and I figure I should check its open...1.5 hours into a 2 hour bus ride. Its closed on Mondays of course. Not sure what to do I decide to stay the night and go tomorrow (Tuesday). Good decision...Xalapa is awesome. I haven't done much
but it is defs a much nicer city. Lots of young people because of the university...which is good as I ended up going for a walk and dinner with some students from the place. And that brings us to now. Plans are to visit the museum tomorrow as well as the gallery of contemporary art then return to Veracruz in the evening...catch an early night and then fly to Guadalajara in the morning Wednesday. Am booked in for a week more of Spanish classes there and then its on to Chiapas and I'm thinking a 6 day hike in Guatemala. We shall see. Anyways hasta luego amigos y amigas.
