We stopped at a roadside stand on the way out of town to buy shrimp tamales. When I opened them up, there were whiskers coming out of each end. Guess what? There were 2 whole shrimp in each one. Tasty, but we will have to deconstruct them to eat them. They were 8 for $100p. Expensive tolls and bumpy roads, the libre roads must be hell. Chili and Potato tacos, Yum!
We took mostly toll roads until we got through Tepic, then we took the libre (free road) for the last 15 Km to the turn off for Santa Maria del Oro. Ed said every truck with wheels was loaded with sugar cane. It is amazing how high they stack the trucks, plus you could not fit a toothpick in there. We were stuck behind several of the trucks. I see the advantage of the toll road.
When we drove into Santa Maria del Oro, the first thing you immediately notice is how clean the town is. What a quaint little town. The streets were very narrow and cars were parked on one side. We had to watch for oncoming traffic and squeeze through. The town square still
had a Christmas tree and there were lights stretched across the streets. There were ruins from an old Cathedral as well.
Laguna Santa Maria del Oro is in an ancient volcano crater. We camped at a tranquil ecoresort , Koala Bungalows. Our site was under enormous fig, mango and manzanilla trees. I am sitting under an orchid tree where I have watched the hummingbird’s flit in for a quick drink. This is a popular spot for bird watchers and I have enjoyed sitting for hours in the morning and watch the birds come awake. There is a beautiful blue and white one with a 1 ½ foot tail the curls down behind him. There are birds of every color and loads of butterflies. Red is about to lose his mind. It is great because Red can run lose in most of the Campgrounds.
We walked down by the lake. Walking is a little tricky, the road is cobblestone. Ed rode his bike about 1/3 of the way around the lake. It beat him half to death. He came back and said “ you are forbidden to get on your bike”. We all walked down one evening for dinner.
I had the whole fried fish. Ed had the fish with garlic, fantastic. He said it was the best fish he had had in years. We had fried bananas with chocolate and ice cream for dessert. It was so good that we went back the next morning for breakfast.
We took a water taxi tour around the lake. The weekend is very busy at the bars and restaurants with families enjoying music by the lake. The tour cost us $30 pesos each or less than $3.
