Heaven
Possibly my favorite discovery in Chetumal Alas, it has been a while since any postings, and there are so many stories to tell. On a whim, a few friends and I decided to venture into Mexico for a weekend. The travel bug was biting again, and we all had a thirst for some a change of scenery. Fortunately, a trip like this requires little-to-no planning, and that was the beauty of it. On Saturday morning at 4:00 a.m we found ourselves down at the bus stop, pillows in hand, wondering what we were about to get into. The bus was long, though we arrived in Mexico, around 10:00 a.m and spent an overwhelming amount of time waiting in lines at customs. For some reason, all of us were deemed fit to enter the country, and we began our adventure. Chetumal is just across the border, though, it was amazing to me what a different world we had stepped into. There was bustling traffic, 4-lane highways, and shopping malls. This kind of development has yet to come to Belize, and wouldn't it be lovely to see it stay that way. Many may not agree with me, but it made me appreciate (more so) why Belize is such

Settled in for the ride home a fabulous place.
Upon arrival, we made our first order of business to find lodging. This didn't take very long, and once this task was aside, we set off on excursions of our choice. A few headed to the zoo, while myself and a few others headed to a lake a ways out of town. Once boarding yet another bus, we soon began to wonder if there really was a lake, as the bus sped further out of town. After what seemed to be an eternity, the driver motioned that this was our stop. Many hours were spent relaxing on a pier which we claimed our own, as well as visiting a nearby fiesta we overhead at the adjoining bar.
While enjoying the sun from the pier, we noticed we had a follower upon returning from the nearby fiesta. In order for you to get the picture, it is important for add to the story that the 4 of us on the pier were all ladies. Our follower happened to be one of the 3 white people we had seen, and kindly dubbed, "the spring breakers." To our surprise, his opening line was, "Greetings ladies, I am the

Questioning vegetarianism right about now... ambassador from my dock to yours." You really have to admit, a line like this takes courage. We kindly told him so. A pleasant conversation ensued, but alas, we had to turn down his kind offer of tequila and cards, as Chetumal was calling and we had plans to return to the rest of our minions.
Somehow, we found a ride back to Chetumal and cleaned up for dinner as planned. As much as I hate to admit this, the excitement of the masses was calling to me, and I was really looking forward to the movies. Poor Lorenzo, the representative dude on the trip soon found himself overwhelmingly outnumbered and was dragged to a Hugh Grant chick flick. After the hours of tormenting pop songs came to an end, we left to rejoin the rest of our friends.
In Belize we are used to enjoying a nightlife that usually ends around midnight or 1 a.m. Much to our surprise, we found out that the party doesn't get started until about this time in Mexico. We were all fading, but managed to put in an hour or so at one of the clubs. Definitely an enertaining experience, though
not really a conversational opportunity for me, since the only complete phrase I can say in Spanish happens to be, "Where is the bathroom?"
I relished in getting a full nights sleep, and then happily went downstairs to a *free* breakfast at the hotel. It was difficult to get organized in the morning, but we managed to check out the beach for an hour, as well as a trip to a Maya culture museum, and the mall, all before leaving at 3 p.m. Going to a mall was a mind-boggling experience for me, I was actually concerned my head might explode. The entire experience was pretty much the antithesis of my experiences in Belize.
The trip to the mall lasted only a short time, and we were back to racing across town to catch the bus home. A small dilemma ensued when two of our friends failed to appear at the bus stop, though we later found out they had caught an earlier bus. The trip home was relatively uneventful, and we were left to plan our next voyage.
