This blog site, Travel Blog, is being buried by Trip Advisor in terms of viewership, for one reason--because it is so user unfriendly to the poster. It has been for the five years I have been associated. It's hard to post, but anyway, I sure enjoy posting things and photos about my travels, if for no other reason, to answer questions that upcoming, prospective travelers have, especially first timers.

From reading the forums and comments on Trip Advisor among others, it is plain to see that many travelers feel insecure about prices, or the general security of places, especially in Mexico.

Regarding Cancun, if a single or a double traveler wishes to economize, one can easily find a 400 peso room in the downtown near the ADO bus station. The one I stayed, Las Palmas was 30 usd for private room with a safe feeling and a friendly staff. Lot's of young and older travelers there who enjoyed the kitchen privileges. It has good internet and nice flowing hot water. One doesn't go to Cancun to stay in the room with the remote, so an all inclusive resort is not necessary unless it's an occasion to splurge. I used the downtown hotel as an entry point from the airport and as an exit point to be near the airport shuttle on the night of my arrival and departure.

One who stays cheaply in the downtown can take advantage of the ADO bus terminal to plan several self guided day tours, including Xel Ha, Xcaret, Tulum, Isla de Mujeres, Cozumel, Playa Carmen, Puerto Morelos, etcetera. Tulum and Holbox(sh) are recommended for overnighters, especially Holbosh which is 4 hours from the downtown by chicken bus (104 pesos). If it weren't a chicken bus, then the trip would take 1 1/2 to and from Holbosh. A taxi will take you to or from for 80usd--a bit spendy.
