True to his word, Scott was there to meet us and while he´d made a few enquiries about the fishing, he hadn´t booked anything. We also found out that he was still with Si and Ayesha and so we headed over to the beach and caught up with them. As luck would have it, they were also staying at hotel Ines which was quite a coincidence. After a brief rendevouz and a spot of lunch we then spent the afternoon booking up bus tickets for the forthcoming trips, as well as arranging a bird-watching / kayaking trip for the following morning at a lagoon just outside Escondido. This all had to be done in the town centre which was a bit of a hike and away from the beach and so it took a while. When we´d eventually sorted everything out, we met the others on the beach for a beer and to watch the sunset….which was absolutely stunning.
Puerto Escondido is very chilled out town with a lovely empty beach and lots of small bars and guesthouses strung out along the main beach side road. Its developed enough to make things interesting, but with none of the neon
lights and tacky tourist shops that ruin so many other beach side towns. Its the type of place you could easily kick back in and spend a few weeks….which is exactly why we booked up our bus tickets straight away!
That evening we all went to a wikid little restaurant on the beach where we had some fantastic fish and a few drinks, before heading on to a bar for a few more. We left the guys about midnight as we had to be up early for Kayaking (6am meet), which was a shame as we´d had a really good evening.
Despite leaving early we weren´t in too great a shape when we got up at 5.30am, and before turning up twenty minutes late we were on the brink of going back to bed. However, we´re glad we persevered as it was a really good trip in the end. The lagoon was enormous and surrounded by really dense Mangrove forest, which made it ideal for birds. This was the first time Dani´d been kayaking and she really enjoyed it and now wants to do more when we get back (not sure if she´ll be so keen in
the cold though)! The guide was also excellent, very knowledgeable about birds and the area in general which makes a nice change from some of the guides that we´ve had on other trips where they just make it up as they go along.
We arrived back in Escondido just in time to catch the others before they headed off to the beach. Though as we were pretty knackered we grabbed a few hours kip and then chilled out around the pool for the rest of the afternoon.
That evening, after taking in another spectacular sunset, we all went out for a meal at Santa Fe, a very smart hotel at the end of the beach with an extensive veggie menu (Dani was well chuffed). The food was excellent and we had really good laugh with the guys. We were certainly going to miss them when we left. We´d actually booked up fishing for the following morning and so while Ayesha and Si hit the bars Scott and us retired back to the hotel for a quick dip in the pool and then bed.
It was another early start, (6.30am meet), and then we were straight out on
the water and full of expectation. The guide had guaranteed us that were going to catch and after seeing the size of the bait we were using and hearing tales of a lost 600 lbs Marlin from the previous evening, we could barely contain ourselves (well Dan couldn´t at least). Needless to say, we didn´t catch anything during the entire 4 hr trip! At one point we actually drove through several shoals of tuna, but alas they weren´t interested and we didn´t even manage to knock any out with the boat! All in all, a bit of a disappointment and an expensive one at that….although, we did see hundreds of turtles and loads of dolphins which kept Dani happy.
After arriving back on shore we grabbed some breakfast before packing our bags and checking out. Fortunately Scott and the guys were hanging around for a few more days and so we had somewhere to stash our bags before heading off to the bus station in the early afternoon.
We hadn´t actually planned to go to Puerto Escondido, but we´re really pleased we did, as the place was awesome and we had a great couple of days. We were
really sad to say good bye and if it hadn´t of been on such a tight schedule we´d definitely have stayed longer!
