My alarm yells at me to get up at 3:30am. Ugh! It's miserable waking up that early. How is this supposed to be the start to vacation? Eventually I crawl out of bed and pull together the last of my things, which I realize now did not include my sunglasses or my toothbrush. (Good thing Mexico sells those kind of things) I receive a text from my travel buddy for this adventure, Karolina, that she's on her way. My boyfriend Michael graciously agrees to drive us to the airport at that hour. He might deserve a gold medal or something. I give him the biggest hug and kiss as soon as we unload the bags from the car. I know it's just a week, but I'm sure going to miss him.
Karolina and I were unlucky to have booked our flight too late to get the best flight itinerary. We're traveling from Philadelphia to Chicago to Phoenix to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico today. Sound like fun? Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the trip, but somehow I bet it'll be worth it once that Mexican sun hits my face.
In Phoenix we meet up Fred. We had agreed to meet
at the All Sports Bar, a pub I had looked up online. WE arrived and found that All Sports Bar did not exist! We began to investigate each of the Terminal 4 sports bars and were lucky enough to discover him at the 2nd bar we checked. We had a quick bite to eat and were on our way.
During the flight I heard such a love story from the elderly man sitting next to me. This man went into priesthood at the age of 18, but prior to that he had a high school sweetheart by the name of Anette. Anette's family was not wealthy and the man's family broke up their romance in hopes that he'd pursue a career in corporate business, just like his dad. He describes that he regretted letting his family break them apart ever since it happened. She moved on and started a family; a family that now includes a few grandchildren. Well around Christmas this year this man received an email from Anette's daughter. This note explained how Anette still talks about him all the time. Anette is single now and her daughter would love to see her happily catching up with
the man the daughter considers the love of her mothers life. Immediately this man flew up to Detroit where Anette lives to see her. They had a great weekend and have been talking over the phone every single evening since. They're meeting up in Puerto Vallarta for vacation. That story really moved me.
Anyway, we land in Puerto Vallarta and it's overcast! I'd been checking the weather all week and this was supposed to be sunny and 86 degrees! Regardless there are palm trees, warmth and margaritas. Somehow I will manage to preserver.
We make our way through immigration and customs. I remind Fred to keep his head down and ignore the angry mob of tour salesmen who's charm he fell victim to last year. I take his hand and we make way. The salesmen are yelling out offers and one man asks Fred where he's staying. Fred looks up, and they make eye contact and start to discuss our travel plans. Oo no, haha! Karolina and I almost literally drag him away and we get in a cab to begin our week in paradise.
We check into the hotel (Golden Crowne Paradise) and are met with
delicious drinks complete with pineapples and umbrellas. The hotel receptionist slaps our all-inclusive wristbands and we're in business. We make reservations for dinner, unpack and marvel at the sound of the waves and the palm trees while sipping each of our variety of tequila concoction. Dinner was wonderful. I had the Mahi Mahi topped with the resort's special Sexy Coffee. We all ordered the sexy coffee more for the show than the actual drink, though it was delicious. The waiter makes it in front of us burning the bourbon in a blue flame that is beautiful as it dances around between the glasses in his hands. I love this place.
Exhausted, we head to sleep. It's been such a day!
