Places Visited:- Puerto Vallarta, Zihuatanejo, Acapulco and Puerto Escondido.
After the train journey we arrived into Los Mochis at 11pm and managed to get an overnight bus South towards Puerta Vallarta (14 hours away). The bus journey wasn’t as bad as most as once the sun rose the scenery was great. They should rename the Pacific Coast the green coast as everywhere was covered in an array of different shades of green with lots of types of trees and shrubs. It made me think of what a beautiful place this is and how luck I am to see it, not something I think too much about usually at 6am, especially on a bus! It put me in a great mood and revitalised the energy of a now old 30 year old!
When we arrived we were back into baking heat as you´d expect on the coast. Not really much to report here, a big tourist destination aimed at the Americans, the ATMS even distribute dollars! Luckily for us we arrived in the off season and the place was like a ghost town, lots of the shops and restaurants were closed, it was nice enough to chill out after our
long journey.
From Puerta Vallarta we travelled South to Zihuatanejo, you film buffs will know it as the place Red goes to find Andy in Shawshank Redemption, the reason for us to come really! Hollywood must have filmed it somewhere else though as the beach is nothing like the film! -its now a tourist/backpackers haven, I suppose in the 1950s when I think the Shawshank bit is based on it would have looked different!?
Zihuatanejo was much nicer, much more relaxed and more our scene, the beaches were nice with white sand and we caught a few rays under a palm and larked in the sea. The waves here were pretty big and we had fun jumping about in them and getting pounded into the sand. Great fun, I might have to try surfing one day! We stayed another 2 nights here, we tried the local speciality of tirests (don’t think its spelt that way but I cant remember!), raw white fish marinated in lime juice, red onions and served on crackers with thinly sliced habanero chillies, It was really nice, no nasty side affects either, only the burning of the chilies, Michelle was stuggling a bit but
must of liked it as she stuffed her face!
Next was Acapulco, its like a slightly smaller version of Benidorm, high rise hotels crammed along the beaches, tacky tourist shops selling crap. We spent a day checking out the beaches; the main one we liked was quieter than the others, still loads of touts trying to sell anything from massages to donuts (nicely melted in the midday sun, mmmm!). The sea is a bit rough there, more big waves, so happy again larking about. We had a laugh ducking each other and trying to dive over the highest waves, most of the time the surf hit us and we would emerge bedraggled and battered!
We went to watch the Clavidistas at La Quebada, Cliff divers. You might remember the fil when elvis did the same! For 35 pesos (1.75 pounds) you get to watch the loony divers, included in the cost is either a beer or a soft drink, bargain! These fellas need their heads testing that’s for sure, not really my idea of fun chucking myself of a 35m cliff into a tiny channel chock full with jagged rocks. It was impressive though, takes some big balls
to do what they do, we went twice, once during the day then at sunset, its the only place you can actually see the sunset, some of the photos we got are fab. It made it worthwhile coming here really. Although there was more of that incessant heat, 40c during the day and a lovely cool 31c at night, without air con it wasn’t particularly nice!
Were in Puerto Escondido at the moment, Surfers Paradise, It's like being back in Oz, everywhere you look there’s lanky, long haired surfer dudes and tasty bikins clad surf chicks, the Mexican pipeline is apparently at its best here, and looking at the waves I can see why! We couldn't lark about in these waves as they would of killed us! and even some of the waves were too big to surf and there were life guards stopping people going in the water!
It’s a great place, the atmosphere is relaxed and cooler. We stayed in luxury above this
Canadians guy house with huge veranda and great views were you can
just sit and relax in a hammock and let the world go by. Our room overlooks the beach and the sunsets
Man Eater!
It looks like a crocodile has jumped out of the water to eat the local fisherman. It´s actually a pelican being fed the fish scraps! are out of this world.
We also stayed here for Mexican Independence day without any worries! As predicted it kicked off in Mexico and Oaxaca so were glad to be out of it.
We have to leave soon before our Mexican visa runs out. In 2 days time and we are off to Guatemala where we are going to sign up for Spanish school. For me to learn from scratch and for Michelle to get fluent! Lets hope that goes o.k!!
