Bright Jugos
All different kinds of juices One of the things our landlord Eleanor was the most excited about sharing with us was the Tianguis....the Tuesday Market. It is a traveling market that goes around Mexico and on Tuesdays, it makes it's stop here in San Miguel. It is very much an old world style market with just about everything you could ever think of for sale. Piles of clothes, shoes, toys and more all waiting to be dug into...all items are one price per table. The fruits and vegetables are the brightest I have ever seen. The seafood vendors had huge cuts of fish and large prawns flown in from Veracruz. We met the "Mole Man" (Mo-lay Man) who sells two kinds of mole that his mother makes. Everyone's mole is the best and so it has become a bit of a hobby of ours to try different moles. We bought a cup full and we are going to have it over chicken and rice tonight for dinner. There were huge bundles of flowers and baskets everywhere. I was happy to finally find a bolsa (bag) to carry my treasures around. Bolsas are different from purses in that they are a bit see-through and used to carry
vegetables or other things from the market. Mine has a mermaid on it from the game Loteria.
Eleanor said once again that we had to get the shrimp cocktail and once again I got nervous for my stomach. But I trust her and so the three of us ate large cups full of shrimp, avocado and all kinds of goodness. We bought just a few things and then headed home.
School has been going well but it is strange to have homework again. The course I am taking is very intensive and sometimes my brain hits overload, but I can feel my Spanish getting stronger each day...and good thing too! When I walk Byron in the afternoons, the neighborhood kids are always playing outside and they have many questions about Byron. They call him "panda." Byron likes playing with a couple of the street dogs and another house-dog that wears a Hawaiian shirt and is named Mateo. The children are all so joyful. One in particular has captured my heart. She lives next door to us and every time she sees us, she gets so excited, waves her hand about and yells "HOLA!" excitedly. She has the cutest
Watermelon Stand
makes your mouth water smile and big cheeks as she still carries a bit of baby fat. Her name is Valeria and I am always just as happy to wave back and yell "HOLA!," in reply. There are other neighbors that we are becoming friends with as well.
On Wednesday after school, the library hosted a lecture series that I attended. It was taught by a retired professor and he had a great slideshow to go with his notes. The topic was The Mayans and it was the first part in a series. We learned about Mayan architecture, math, and some murals. It was very interesting. Did you know that the Mayans had paved roads in their cities but never used anything with a wheel? No carts or anything like that has been found. They were used simply for foot traffic. They also were one of the few early societies to use the number 0. Oh and also the most honored human sacrifice wasn't a virgin girl, but a Prisoner of War! Eep! I am going to attend the next lecture series too as we will learn about Mayan Religion, Politics and Sex. I imagine it will be much more interesting than math...
Ronnie has been cranking out the artwork like there is no tomorrow. He can easily do a page a day now and just glows when he finishes.
Last night we had another Happy Hour with Eleanor. She made us a pitcher of her family's margarita recipe. After three each, a storm rolled in and forced us inside. We then finished the night with a shot each of premium tequila. As you can imagine, we were quite drunk as we stumbled up the stairs. Another great time sharing stories and laughs with Eleanor. She has truly become a great friend to us.
The drinking made it difficult to get up for school today. Ronnie came with me as our professor, Warren Hardy, was giving an open lecture about the differences in culture between Americans and Mexicans. It was very interesting and helped us understand even more about our host country. We are very honored to be here and to be as accepted as our neighbors has made us feel. I look forward to getting to know them even more.

The market must be so great. Is Ronnie doing Viz work or just for fun or both?
