Just so you can see the distance we´ve covered so far on our trip!! will be a lot shorter distances for a while now. thank god!!

8 of these statues were found inside one of the layers of the walls of the temple (there were 7 layers built on top of each other)
You will be glad to here that we eventually arrived in Mexico City without any further problems last night. The hostel we booked is lovely, beautifully clean and right in the centre of the historic district, just off the main plaza.

We have spent most of today exploring the sights in this area, no more boring you to death with airplane and airport talk!
Although we did manage to catch the airport baggage handlers dropping our bags from a great height just before we got on our last flight, no damage done though! Our first stop was the Temple Mayor which is an Aztec ruins just off the centre of mexico city´s main plaza.

We had to walk round the block to get into the temple through all the crazy shouting street vendors selling loads of very random and not particularly useful things! Having walked through there it made you realise how quiet a temple is! We spent a couple of hours wandering round the ruins and its attached museum; where we pretended to be able to understand all the spanish information plaques. After that we walked up to one of the major art galleries / theatres

This cheerful looking statue is a likeness of one of the Aztec rain gods.
to look at some murals by famous mexican artists. These were very cool, kind of comic book style images, most with a strong political or historical message - which meant we didn´t need to read the spanish info plaques!! One of the murals by Diego Rivera called Man, Controller of the Universe was originally commissioned for the Rockerfellers Center, New York but they decided to destroy it as they were not too impressed with its anticaptialist theme. However the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico asked him to paint another copy of the original for pride of place in their gallery. Check his work out on the internet if you are interested.

Before heading to the art gallery we decided we were a bit peckish so braved the chorus of shouting and headed back into the streets packed with vendors near the national palace. There were many unusual and unfamiliar foods for sale but we decided due to our limited spanish it would be best to buy from a vendor where we could actually see the food and point at what we wanted. We ended up with two delicious tortillas each filled with some kind of spicy beef,

These stone snakes were huge and their bodies ran through the temple. Their heads came out of the base of the temple to guard it against unknown evils!!
stir fried cactus and chilli sauce. Having sucessfully ordered using the point and nod method we thought we should ask what the things we had just eaten were called in case we actually needed to ask next time. So we asked the guy that we bought them from who looked at us as if we were mad and said "they´re tacos mate", no pretentious names for food here!

looks like it could fit in your pocket but its actually an 8 tonne carving of an Aztec goddess and the first piece of art found at the temple site. No we didn´t make the name up!!

This is the art gallery / theatre we went to; the picture really doesn´t do it justice. The whole thing is covered in beautifully carved marble, inside and out!
