A treat for breakfast today - two fried eggs, just as I like it...with toast (not quite to my taste - why does the bread always taste sweet abroad?). Ian goes for scrambled eggs and ham again.
Back to our room to pack once again - we are moving back to Creel today. Bags packed, our goodbyes to Claudia and family completed, we haul our bags the 200 yards across the pot-holed road to sit outside the store to await our bus. We know that it will be similar to our trip up here...stopping frequently to pick up locals going to town. In the event the bus is only twenty minutes late, and the journey takes ninety minutes...only half an hour more than scheduled.
Creel can best be described as having three main roads running parallel to each other. The first is the original road, probably built at a similar time as the railway since it runs literally right next to the line. The second also runs parallel to the original road and railway, but a short distance to the east and has a ‘high street’ feel to it, and finally there is the ‘bypass’ road - much wider,
without obstructions and main junctions but with newer business along its length.
Our hotel is situated on the original road, and appears to be based on a Swiss chalet design. Since we are several hours too early to book in, we dump our luggage and head out to look for a laundry, lunch and ‘The Three Amigos’ tour guides, but not necessarily in that order. The amigos are out to lunch, the laundry is located and now we feed on roast chicken legs, fresh fried chips and beans.
Lunch finished, we cross the railway tracks to explore the one remaining street in town which includes a small park and two tiny churches. That’s it, we have seen the entire town and still half an hour left before check in! We have booked six nights here so looks like we will be chilling for most of it. :-)
Back at our hotel we are offered a choice of rooms - one on the first floor and one on the second. It’s obvious that I will choose the top floor as it has the best views. Poor Ian will be carrying the luggage up a very steep and strange
‘half-a-tread on each side’ type design. I guess it’s the only way to fit a stairway into the space. The Swiss chalet feel continues in the room, where the roof slope means that the beams are only one metre above the bed. Ian spends much of the afternoon stooped over trying to avoid the inevitable - he has drawn the short straw, although he would insist on putting his clothes in the cabinet beside the bed rather than in the tall wardrobe in the area with plenty of headroom. There are several clunks and expletives. He has now decided to move his stuff.
While the weather is slightly warmer than at our previous location, it is still a lot cooler than we have become acclimatised to - actually quite pleasant during the day but a little bit chilly at night. Our room is very warm and cosy.
We head out for something to eat. We are not looking for a huge meal as we ate earlier. We locate a take away pizza parlour and decide to share. Ian is amused to note a bottle of Worcester Sauce labelled English Sauce. There is a nice communal lounge and eating
area back at the hotel so we can take our pizza back there.
It appears that Sunday evening is the Mexican Saturday night, the main street is filled with cars and loud music is blaring from a loudspeaker near the small plaza. We have a grandstand view from a balcony at the pizza place. The locals are all out enjoying themselves, eating take aways, browsing the street stalls or just sitting in the park.
