On our last day in Mazunte The Tijuana trio turned up..unfortunatly we had to embark on a 12hr bus ride to San Cristobal de las casas..but we said farewell with a couple of beers and a sandy sunset. Due to the heat on the beach we were in shorts and t shirts for the night bus...another schoolboy error..they have arctic air con in these buses = very cold and tired brace of Henry´s. After arriving in San Cristobal in Chiapas we headed to Casa Bablyon. It turned out to be more of a hang-out for Mexican hippies intent on sitting around on mushroom comedowns watching dvds all day...not what we were here for and its not the most welcoming when the only conversation was a glare from a face full of hair and metal...we were gringos in the wrong anarchist commune. The whole day was a bit of a disaster - it drizzled all day and our dinner consisted of the driest and most tasteless Mexican food outside of Taco Bell's. We headed back to the hostel to face an early night and some reading (so boring eh) Although Henry M did wake at 4 in the morning to crys from his stomach to not jepodise his silk blanket (white!)..and he bolted to the bathroom desperatly tring to keep his intestines from falling out.Four hours later Henry A woke up relieved to have missed the onslaught of the bathroom but looking forward to a tour of the nearby Canyon..now alone as a two hour boat ride for the Mase could have had considerable causulties. Henry M stayed in town and found the sister hostel to Oaxaca's Bananna Magic...much better.

Eco-tourism they call it...driving a boat through a 'protected area' (which was actually full of litter) and disturbing wildlife for the photo-op action shot. I´m not sure how ecological this was...but maybe i got the wrong idea, evironmental commerce? Going into a small bat cave and 50 flashes going off whilst the boat negotiates the litter and continues to pump its diesel exhaust fumes into a wild anmial's habitat. We then embarked on driving into a flock of birds in order that they would fly up...it does seem contradictory to the 'eco' idea...but again i'm probably just being naive and idealistic. However, the canyon was very impressive so long as you looked up. After the canyon I was meant to be

going to an indigenous village...we turned up in a town...which wasnt in any way indigenous...blatant tourist trap, the only thing that surrounded the town square was tourist-tat shops. I was set up. I sat and read my book and had some burritos...which were great. Henry M was meanwhile relaxing in the better surroundings of The Magic Hostel and getting to know the new arrivals..standard traveller chat. A few beers later saw us both to bed and HM was feeling alot better.

A full recovery by Thursday morning meant a walk into town to try and find the food market...in order that we could try and save some money and make our own stuff...half an hour later and we had already eaten in a torta restaurant and spent all our money on two hammocks, the fact i brought one from home left me during the fun of the haggle...oh well we live and learn, or try to. We then took a trip up the hill to a very peaceful church although the surroundings seemed to harbour teenage lovers in pre-nookie fondling. Henry M had a photo with some local kids in exchange for some coin...it nearly rained. Off to Palenque tomorrow as we head towards the Carribean coast.

darling henry one and henry 2 we are as ytou know all in glorious norfolk and wish you were here. ha ha ha. still misbehaving like mad, just like the whole family. the e mails you have sent are really marvellous and the photos are great and i so enjoyed reading your remarks. it appears you are having a wonderful experience and i am extremely envious but a bit too old for all this rambling of yours. i am still at white lodge but half looking for another abode but where? this is the first thing that i have ever sent so ther world should rock but i do think it is all mad and i would hate to do it all the time. I REALLY DO FEEL THE WORLD HAS BECOME ALMOST TOO SMALL AND WE HAVE NO PRIVACY OR QUIET IN OUR LIVES AT ALL AND I THINK WE ALL NEED SPACE.At Wimbledon for instance phones were vibrating all the times, at weddings, in church even on holiday as you now are, we are totally up to date with what you are doing and this is not a crtiscim of you at all but i really do feel a great sadness that there is no expectation left because we are living it with you photos and all so no great fun, of course than to hold you and know that you are safe on your return. these are just the thoughtds of a very aged grumpy old lady who wishes the world would become alittle less advanced. darling one I LOVE YOULOTS AND REALLY look forward to your safe return. LOVE and hugs Granny Pauline.
