Agua Azul
Actually Agua Brown, not Agua Blue! Have spent the last 5 days or so travelling with a nice German girl called Katharina. Instead of getting the bus directly from San Cristóbal to see some more ruins in Palenque (pal-en-kay), we took a tourist mini-bus which stopped at a few interesting sites on the way to break up the journey.
First stop was Agua Azul, which literally means ´blue water´. However, being the rainy season at the moment, the water was a kind of mucky brown colour. Nevermind, it was still pretty!
Then another waterfall called Misol-Ha where you could walk behind the waterfall. Fun, but a bit wet!
Then finally to the ruins at Palenque. These ruins are particularly beautiful because they are set in a jungle and look all mystical and romantic. Unfortuately, some of the beauty was lost on me as I was quite possibly the hottest and sweatiest I´d ever been in my life! Ick!
Instead of staying in a hostel in the town near Palenque, we decided to stay at El Panchan, which is a jungle clearing 4km away from the site with a few places to eat and sleep. It was really nice, but a bit bingly-bongly for
Me and Katharina
Showing off our expensive 50p necklaces we had engraved with our names- classy! me! Load of archaeologists and hippie types live there. The food was so yum (pasta and pizza made a welcome change from Mexican food) and there were a few live bands playing music from South America at each night. At 11pm they had bongo drums and weirdy hippie types doing fire twirling. Quite fun to watch!
