11 hours work, 2 posts
This is the job I hired out ......First day, 5 hours, second 4 hours, 3rd day down to 2. I think they thought I was going to pay for 3 full days work (18 hours) but I held strong. Not sure how that will bode in the next few days. Hola, again from Los Barriles. The wind continues to blow, but I am not complaining as I know how much snow dropped last night in Michigan. Even more reason to come down.........
I hired the guys here to install a walk in gate as well as a gate we can use to pull in the car here when we leave. Ridiculously slow, but I kept track of their hours and only paid by the hour. I think they were not happy, but I can't see paying a day's wage (6 hours, can you believe it) just because they are physically here in the park but not necessarily working. See, this is how it works. If you have $20 in your pocket, then you figure out how long you can last w/ that $$. Next you go have fun and you do not work until you need more money. Now you go back to work and do the least amount of work for what you can get paid so that you can get by for a few more days to buy beer and other necessities. I know all this but it still makes me crazy!! On the other hand, my contractor
Tiles on step risers
This turned out very well. Just so happened that my old contractor, Isidro, showed up here just AFTER I hired the other guys in the park. Isidro's bro, Jesus, got right to work on this job, and finished the job in about 7 hours non stop. Wish the other guys I hired would do the same. from last year, Isidro, came by and so I asked him about tiling the risers on my stair. No problem. He showed up on Saturday with his brother, Jesus, who got right to work, worked straight throught for about 7 hours and finished the job!! Isidro showed up to pick up his bro and we visited for a bit and then he asked for a beer!! Ha! Ha! I did propose to him that if the park guys do not finish, I would let his crew finish the gate job. I guess I will be getting a reputation around here.
Saturday the firemen from La Paz were here to "educate" us on the types of fires and how to prevent them. We had the commandante who went around the park looking for "high risks" (duh......roofs made of dry palm) and then reported back to us on the "plan". While he was doing the "inspection", the "trainer" then explained the types of fires, types of extinquishers and how to act in the event of a fire. I was acting as interpreter. Fortunately, we have 2 retired firemen in the park so that was helpful. We are all not so sure
My Spanish Students
This is their reaction to my announcement that there would be no homework! This class has been a riot to teach!!!! what caused the owner of the park to have this "educational opportunity" but I think it is a case of CYA but that would be a very logical thing so that couldn't be, could it?
On our way back from the airport, we decided to see if we could find a hotel nearby so that when Joyce and Bob get here we could spend the night in San Jose as their flight out is quite early in the morning. We thought that we could spend the day in Cabo San Lucas messing around and then crash in a hotel for the night. We did find a decent place just across the street from Soriana, the store where we had just shopped. I went in and inquired about the price and to see a room. Not bad for the price, clean and looking quite secure. We felt that that might be a possibility so we headed home. Just past the airport, I noticed a new hotel called Diamant Auto-Hotel. Hey, better check it out, right? It had a security gate through which we drove and on the facing wall as we drove it, a digitized sign said, "Proceed to room
Soriana--Dept. Store in San Jose
We stopped off here after dropping friends off at the airport. Nice store, lots of variety and not terribly high priced. 16". Wow, I thought. Each little room was connected to the next in a series of about 8 rooms, each with its own little garage that you pulled into and then lowered the door. VERY secure, right? I saw a lady and asked if she worked here and she said that she did and would show us a room. Rooms were clean, nice and I asked again of the price of $350 pesos or about $27 USD for a night. She replied, "Oh, no. That is for four hours only! The price is $770 for the whole night!" I had a feeling that this might be a "no-tell motel" because of a heart shaped rope light on the entrance but then I thought, maybe not as Mexicans love their lights!! Isn't that a hoot???? No, we are NOT staying there, Bob!!!!!
I am teaching my Spanish class here in the park and it continues to be a blast. Hope you enjoy the photo of my students.
Next blog entry will be about our trip to La Paz for Carnival. We are going w/ 3 other couples and spending the night so we can take in the parades
and other activities. La Paz is the capital of BSC. Ciao
