The coastal ferry took us from Qaqortoq in Greenland to Aassiat in four days. Every day we stopped at small settlements of multu-coloured houses where the ferry's arrival once a week means children coming home from school, husbands returning from work, wives returning with new born babies. The ship has a canteen where, three times a day, most of us meet to eat, drink and chat. We meet a small group of tourists from Italy, a pair of German tourists complaining that their guidebook is ten years out-of-date and two Austrians who are worried about flight cancellations. Most of the people on board were Greenlanders, often just making short hops between one town and the next. There were groups of school children on their way home, all sleeping in dormitories low down in the ship. Children ... read more

Preparing for The Arctic Circle Trail It is drawing closer to the time when I will need to pack my trusted rucksack for another adventure. The spare room is amass with equipment all to be packed in a bag I'll carry on my back for nearly three weeks. The vast majority of the cluttered kit pile consists of packet after packet of dehydrated food. url=http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7065qNk07Ks/UdWmJqajlCI/AAAAAAAAE2c/zJfMk2Uoi-Y/s400/Ikkattook+accommodation+hut.jpgimg=http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7065qNk07Ks/UdWmJqajlCI/AAAAAAAAE2c/zJfMk2Uoi-Y/s320/Ikkattook+accommodation+hut.jpg rightOne of a handful of ti... read more

Repeat after me...We are flying to Kangerlussuaq! I know, you are going to ask me Kanger what? Well, if you are here you already know we are speaking of Greenland. But first I want to thank my friend Hugues for helping me to make this trip a reality. We have to thank few other people, but we will not name them here. Our last “boys” trip was exactly three years ago to Sydney. This time it would be less wine, and more cold weather. Kangerlussuaq is the main airport hub of Greenland. There are currently only 2 international flights to Greenland. The first one is on a small Dash aircraft twice a week from Reykjavik, and the second one, actually the main one is from Copenhagen. Air Greenland has only one A330 and few little Dash, ... read more

Even though I only spent three and a half days in Greenland, I am in love. I arrived at the airport early Monday morning, groggy but excited, only to find out that our 0915 flight to Kangerlussuaq has been delayed six hours. An ominous start to the trip, yes, but I spent that time productively, befriending some classmates and spending the meal vouchers the airport gave us. Long story short, our flight was cancelled to due technical problems with the one plane that Air Greenland owns for flights between Kangerlussuaq and Copenhagen. Kangerlussuaq is the largest airport in Greenland, and the only point of entry by air. There is only one flight between Copenhagen and Kangerlussuaq everyday, and the airport is the only reason Kangerlussuaq exists. The original airstrip was built by the USA, and the ... read more

I just got back from GREENLAND! If i could describe Greenland in a few words, they would be: snowy, cold, and rather barren. The trip was really eventful, starting with day one. I woke up with a really sore throat. Our flight was supposed to depart from Copenhagen at 9:30am on Monday. When all 30 of us arrived at the airport at 7:30 to check in, they told us the flight was to be delayed until 2pm due to mechanical issues with the Air Greenland plane. We were all tired and upset with this information, but we made the best out of the wait, getting to know each other. Unfortunately as 2pm came around, they continued to push the time back further and further. Finally at 4pm they announced that they were canceling the flight. We ... read more
