So this week starts with my dog being diagnosed with cancer, and ending with me breaking my niece's leg...all in all a good time...
Well, it wasn't all bad...we were greeting with hugs and of course, lots of my mom's fantastic homemade food which was great, traveling everyday can be hard on the stomach. We had several great evenings with company and we got to showcase our skills with Charles on the guitar and me on my accordian...even jammed a bit with Bill on his petal steel. Charles' favourite part was getting a ride on the combine...however a tad disappointed he didn't get to drive...we just couldn't understand why they wouldn't let a newbie drive a $400,000 machine😉 just kidding, Thanks Bernie and Ron! The combine's passenger seat has become a lot more roomy since the last time I got a ride...probably 20 yrs ago! We also did the standard trip to the dinasour museum to visit "Bruce" the mosasaur (the T-rex of the sea for those of you that haven't had a chance to go yet) and even got to stand in line for the free corn at the Morden Corn and apple festival. I had an awesome time
re-bonding with the family and playing with the kids...Charles wasn't quite so sure about all the rambunctious kids constantly clambering for my attention, so he bonded with Bill over music and "desert racers"...Bill's name for his washing machine fire pit...which Charles made as soon as we got home. We headed for an evening with Carl and Leanne in Carman and enjoyed an awesome homemade pizza and great company reminiscing and playing with more kids. We enjoyed "Mile high pancakes" with Leanne and the kids in the morning and she was able to get some awesome photos of us with Eugene and our instruments. Check out Flashback Photography in Carman if you're in Manitoba and want some photos taken!
We headed to Winnipeg to spend a few more days with the family and be tourists in the city. Of course, the "Forks" is a must see, which Julie explained to Charles was Winnipeg's world famous museum of the importance of forks throughout history. (Ok, it's really downtown winnipeg where the rivers meet and "fork", but we had him going for a little while😉 We enjoyed the boat tour, hung out with Brad and his new addition "Cadillac" (german shepard/lab mix)
and found a great little resaturant in St. Boniface for poutine and "moules and frites" (mussels and fries...delicious!).
After a delicious lunch we decided to go for a round of ice skating. Winnipeg has a few rinks they upkeep in the summer and since Charles had never tried it before we thought it was a must before leaving the city. We were able to borrow a few pairs and Charles took to it like he was a born hockey player...even almost skating backwards by the time we left! During this time us girls were showing off our skills doing the "train" (you know, when the first person sits on the 2nd persons skates, the 3rd person is the engine, etc) We were having a whale of a time, when the train separated with Sarah still hanging on to my pants. I skated a little more, then she lost her balance a little...and still holding on to my pants, I came down with her...more like right on top of her. I got up quickly trying to make sure she was okay, but she kind of just whimpered, "I don't want to do this anymore." Right, understandable, my metal leg just

St. Boniface, Wpg landed on your little fragile 6 yr old leg. Bill came to carry her off the ice and the women-folk gathered to check the damage. It was soon decided that the ER was the next appropriate step and a couple hours later she came home with a cast. Poor, brave girl...I probably cried more than she did, but she forgave fast and we were friends again after a quick trip to "Toys-R-Us" to buy her love back😉 One more night in the city meeting up with Scott and a few of his buddies at my fave old hangout "Times Changed" and we left the city and headed for Steinbach, home of the Mennos for a history/cultural lesson.
We had a great time exploring the little town, eating the traditional borscht and wareneki and Charles enjoyed sitting on all the machinery and being taught how to play "crokinole". Also interesting to see a piece of the Berlin wall, and a new oak tree planted from a seed of the great oak tree that my Opa used to talk about back in Russia. We crossed back over the border, surprisingly fast...a quick search and the patrol gave all our dogs little
