MANITOU BEACH, Watrous
As I write this, we are burning down the vast expanse of highway 365 in SK….a grand highway with 1.5 lanes of dirt road! Also some gravel drift going on….please keep us on the road, Andrea!
Our first stop was spent lounging in luxury for 2 days and nights at Russ & Dani's place (they feed & house us - this is quite luxurious by camping standards!) 😊 We will miss parties & games with you guys!
Second stop: Manitou beach, home of the famous salt lake of Saskatchewan! We were looking forward to bobbing around in these briny waters (also known for the healing / rejuvenating properties of the mineral content) but they didn’t mention the reams of green weeds or the SEA MONKEYS! At least that’s what they looked like….thousands upon thousands of little redish sea creatures creating clouds of colour along the shore. ....huh....we just looked it up in true nerdy fashion and discovered that they are indeed real live SEA MONKEYS - which are actually brine shrimp...who knew?! (see pics - hah!) Kind of pretty to look at actually - the swirls of red backdropped by curtains of green -
but icky for swimming! We wimped out after a bit of wading. Decided to enjoy the sun & sand instead…with our feet covered in dead sea monkeys - hah!
But oh, my various gods! Did the food and the company ever make up for it!! Our friends, Dani, Russ & Jocelyn came along for the day and boy oh boy, did they lavish a feast upon us! Alaskan snow crab boiled over an open fire, hand-crafted (yes, crafted) chicken & shrimp kabobs with peppers, beer….oh, *drool, drool*!!! It was so awesome - we can always count on Russ & Dani to cook spectacular meals for us (mmmm, gravy). Thank you SO much guys!
And so 907 KM down and on to the next adventure in Rhein, SK to meet Andrea’s cousin, then onto less salty but more swim-able SK lakes!
