Sleeping on a bed with a questionable mattress always proves to be an interesting sleep - Man with sore back.
Luckily we were so tired from our busy day that we slept through most of the night but our bed was quite the experienced one. We had heard tales of days past when up to 21 people would spend the night in the cabin; and they all probably crashed in that one bed! At any rate, we were greeted promptly at 5AM by Kessler, who needed to use the facilities and again at 8:30AM by Wayne, who had kindly volunteered to cook a 5-star breakfast. We had a tee-time at the local course in an hour's time with Justin and Ray so we had to dine and dash to make our booking. For both of us, it was our first time playing the course though Laura had already walked it once with her brother. Stepping outside, we could see that the rain from the night before had made the roads look like a good ol' drunken college girl mud wrestling arena. Fortunately, Justin offered to drive us in his white Sherman Tank. Afterwards, Matt was surprised to learn that
it was actually an Oldsmobile.
We made our tee-time by the skin of our teeth and hit promising drives to start our respective rounds. However, the wheels seemed to come off for everybody in the group as the tough course got the better of everybody. Laura finished with a 68 for nine holes; a valiant effort by the beginning golfer. Laura also had quite the highlight as she outdrove everybody on the scenic fifth hole. Matt finished with a 40 and about twenty more mosquito bites. Justin did not fair so well with a 58 and Ray's scored became classified after the 8th hole. Suffice to say we were all looking forward to a cold one as the temperature soared to 26°. With the humidity, it felt even hotter.
When we got back to the cabin, we learned that Percy and Candace had arrived in the middle of the night and they had brought their boat with them. With Justin eagerly awaiting a ride in the tube, we snuck away to slip on our bathing suits and to go for a nice swim in the lake. A decision was made to coerce Kessler into going for a swim too as he was promptly thrown off the dock by Matt. Having seen our brave puppy swim in the lake, we waded in and promptly realized that we must be in the wrong lake. See, we were under the impression that it was summer time and, yep, we were indeed at the beach. However, the water seemed to disagree and felt that we should be ice-fishing and not swimming. Being really brave or really stupid, Matt jumped in anyways and jumped out just as quick, as if somebody had thrown a plugged-in toaster into the water. That was all Laura needed to see to make her realize she wasn't a big fan of swimming in the first place, so we headed to Sandra's cabin for some snacks and conversation.
The day lazed on and we were treated to another BBQ of burgers and assorted salads. After dinner, we all gathered around the campfire as Percy regaled us with bits of wisdom, which were promptly argued or outright refuted by those who knew Percy. Matt, having met most of those gathered just recently, stayed quiet throughout the conversations until talks turned to the 'Riders whereby he probably burned many bridges by denouncing the 'Loveable Losers'.
Fun Fact: Did you know that the Eskimos have won more Grey Cups in this fledgling century than the Riders have in their entire existence? They should put that on a road sign somewhere
Rescuing Matt, Laura took the foot-in-mouth-Albertan on a tour of the cabins around the lake, pointing out interesting little tidbits of her summers past. Oddly enough, alot of Laura's stories started off with a loose statement of her 'sobriety'. While the two of us went on our sight-seeing walk, Percy started igniting fireworks on the beach in preperation of the following evenings festivities. People up and down the beach stopped to watch the '$75 Show' which was quite good as we could see the lights from quite a ways a way. We also found out that more money was put into the fireworks because Percy had found a way to get really cheap firewood (read into that yourselves).
Between the hearty meals, the exhausting golf, the freezing swim and the nightly entertainment, we were exhausted and we retreated up to the cabin for the night. Cheryl joined us and we decided to play a quick game of Scrabble, which wasn't so quick after all. After an hour, we decided to leave the game til tomorrow so we could all get some much needed sleep. Tomorrow was shaping up to be even busier than today!
