Little Falls at the end of our beautiful hike
Well, one thing that driving across the country does for you, is it really teaches you your geography. We had no idea that Manitoba and Northern Ontario had so many lakes. And although we’d seen Ontario on a map before one has no idea of how BIG it actually is until we tried driving across it - it took us a week to cross Ontario alone!

Hm - we may never understand why people live in southern Ontario (too big, too many people, too much traffic!!) Northern Ontario was actually quite lovely. There are so many lakes and beautiful things to see. Driving on single lane windy roads with lots of semi-trucks going really slowly could have been frustrating - nothing but - but luckily for us we weren’t in any hurry so we could just take our time and enjoy the beautiful scenery going by. Seriously, there was a new lake every couple of kilometers and trees as far as the eye could see. Oh, but *sigh* - also lots of beautiful beaches that we couldn’t take advantage of.
It was so sad for us to make such short stops at the beaches, but it was waaaay too

Playing checkers on a natural board... can you tell?
cold and windy to spend any time there. We were hoping to spend some swimming and tanning (well , Anna was hoping to tan and Andrea was hoping for a little bit of colour that wasn’t red!), but we had to drive on instead. We camped for the most part and got in some nice hikes (see the pics!) but had to spend a couple of nights in a motel since it was 5 degrees and so windy that our teeth doubled as bug screens.

… Northern Ontario is also where we got addicted to the DS game Sims 2: Castaways. One of us would drive for an hour and the other would play the game - incentive to get lots of driving done!

The one thing we became really grateful for while driving across Canada was Canadian Tire. We’d never take our car there for repairs, but golly gee they’re great for camping and outdoorsy stuff! We’ve been to one in every province so far. Buying new equipment, easily exchanging damaged stuff we bought in Edmonton (like camping chairs, the cooler, the inverter) - so handy. And every Canadian Tire we’ve been to smells exactly the same

Little Falls again... this time with Andrea!
- it’s a little bit of comfort when everything else is constantly changing - hah!

To sum up Northern Ontario - great camping, beautiful scenery and gorgeous beaches. A great place to go if you have some time to explore. … if it’s not a freakin’ cold July!!!
